How to get Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy is produced in two different ways, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.
Nuclear Fusion
The type of energy that keeps the sun and stars burning. It is generated by combining 2 small atoms. Not a viable energy source because it is to hard to control.
How Electricity is Generated
The heat released from splitting the atoms is used to heat water into steam that then turns a turbine. The energy conversion is chemical to thermal to mechanical to electrical.
This energy source doesn't produce carbon dioxide and also produces more energy than oil using less resources.
How much?
In the U.S. there are 100 reactors in 30 plants located in 30 states to produce 20% of the U.S. electricity. The U.S. also gets most of its uranium from Canada and the Western States. 10.9% of the worlds power comes from nuclear power plants.
Nuclear Fission
Nuclear fission is used in power plants. The Energy is made by splitting uranium atoms which releases the energy in the form of heat and radiation. One uranium pellet can produce as much energy as 150 gallons of oil.
This energy source creates nuclear waste that is stored in pools to cool it down and to act as a radiation shield.
