Close Reading Routine


1.
Read the text silently and annotate
the passage as you read ( Number the paragraphs, circle ( ) words you don’t know and write a synonym above it, underline ( ____ ) the parts that you think are important, write a question mark (?) where you have a question about something or don’t understand something, write an exclamation point (!) next to something important).

2.
Quick Write
: your first impression of the text.

Discuss
with your partner: Partner A (reads quick write response to partner B) Partner B (compares partner A’s response to their own and then share’s their own quick write response).
Example discussion starters: “My response was similar, I wrote______________”
“I wrote something different ______________________”

Listen
while the teacher or group leader reads aloud.

Add new annotations
to the text.

Discuss
what you added with your partner (Partner A shares first then partner B shares).

Agenda:

1. Review answers to text dependent questions from "How to Mark a Book".

2. Complete the student self-assessment (

).

3. Follow steps 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, and 10 of the close reading process using "Learning to Read" by Alex Haley and Malcolm X.

4. Complete Student self-assessment (

).

5. Complete reflection on DEN sheet.


Closure:
Complete the student self assessment for the close reading you completed today .
Reflect on today's learning target: complete after lesson self assessment and explain how close reading will help you better understand what you read.
Reminder: Finish your book this weekend and bring it to class Monday (pds. 1,3,6) or Tuesday (pds. 2, 7). We will write a book review in class on those days.
