Goldstein's History
Scientific Achievements
In 1886 he discovered canal rays or what he termed Kanalstrahlen.
canal rays are beams of positively charged ions (cations).
He is credited with the discovery of protons.
contributions to the atomic theory
Goldstein contributed greatly to the study of cathode rays.
He discovered protons with the experiments he did with cathode rays which would knock electrons of atoms and attract them to a positively charged electrode.
He also discovered several important properties of the cathode rays which contributed to their later identification as the electron.
-Found out that cathode rays were emitted perpendicularly from a metal surface and had energy.
With his work scientists could picture the atomic model more accurately.

Born on September 5th 1850 in Gleiwitz, Prussia.
He was a German physicist of jewish decent.
He was an investigator of discharge tubes.
Died on 25th 1930 in Berlin.
Studied at the university of Breslau.
In the 1870s started investigating discharge tubes and studying cathode rays.
Worked at the Berlin Observatory from 1878-1890.
He got his doctorate in 1881.

With Goldstein's discovery and research of canal rays we were able to identify the subatomic parts of the atom, the proton, and have a better understanding of its structure
