Come on, is a zombie apocalypse even possible?
The Walking Dead
World War Z
, the idea of a zombie apocalypse has entered the mainstream popular culture. With all of the hype about zombies, it makes us wonder, could a zombie apocalypse even happen? According to the CDC, there are actually a few virus strains that can induce zombie-like behavior in humans. The probability of a zombie outbreak is highly unlikely, but we still need to be prepared.
What are the basic things I need to survive?
Non-perishable food items
1-gallon water jug
Utilities (duct tape, flashlight, etc.)
Clothes that provide maximum skin coverage, sturdy shoes
Basic hygiene supplies
Weapons (this could be anything: knife, rod, shovel etc)
Now that you have the basic necessities, what's next?
Stay informed on emergency public announcements for as long as possible. Keep a radio on you at all times, with backup batteries.
Locate military and law enforcement officials. They will be able to provide you with safety and protection. In the case of being bitten, they may have enough medical skills to be able to save you, by severing infected limbs.
How do I defend myself and others?
The only way to kill a zombie is with a head wound. Guns are quick and effective, but don't waste ammo on body shots as they will prove to be ineffective. Use a bladed weapon as much as possible to save ammo. Stay indoors, board up windows, and keep all doors locked. Try to avoid largely populated areas. If the zombie virus can spread, a densely populated area will just be a breeding ground. However, you don't want to be completley isolated either. Stay in a small group.
Stay prepared and be on guard.
Locate a defensible position
If you are unable to locate military officials, try and find a safe and secure place to reside. Like in
The Walking Dead
, prisons are protected from outside intruders. Other safe locations include brick buildings, basements, and general stores.
Work with your group as a team, and stay together
There is safety in numbers, just as long as your group doesn't grow too large. Always have someone on guard, have people to run errands (gathering food, supplies, etc), have someone to watch children if there are any. Never go anywhere alone, always have someone to watch your back.
Stay entertained, don't lose your sanity
Getting caught up in a zombie apocalypse can be very shocking. However, after a few weeks of zombie-slaying, you might feel as if you're going crazy. Tell stories, play games, have someone to talk to. Keep your mind entertained so that you don't lose it.
Now that you have a basic knowledge of zombie survival 101....
You're ready to go kill some zombies, if an apocalypse ever occurs. Keep in mind a few key points: keep basic supplies with you at all times, a small group is your safest option, and always remember to aim for the head.
