Piaget & Dewey Students, teachers, parents, and the community play a great role in the development of curriculum and activities. Students should be treated as contributors to the curriculum. Their interest and concerns are of great importance when designing the curriculum and activities. Some "oppose progressive educational ideas because they have led to practical failure and greater social inequity." (171) Supporters of progressivism believe that "teachers should present new content that would celebrate the culture of the oppressed, and they should also instruct in new methods that would encourage intellectual resistance." (171) Progressivism is the creation of "self-governing learning communities that can lead to true education reform." (178) Parents, teachers, and communities work together to design new schools that address students' needs and interests. These schools place great emphasis on rest for others, personalized instruction, active learning, and the development of the capacity for astute probing though. (178) Progressive education focuses on critical inquiry, curriculum depth, and collaboration and a downplaying of multiple-choice testing, rote memorization, and highly competitive classrooms. Progressivism "encourages active learning, group work, and engagement with the outside world, as it strives to meet the individual needs of each student." (183) Reference:

Progressivism relate to today's classroom? The gap between the real world and schools should be bridged through field trips, internships, and adult mentors. Whether inside or outside the classroom, teachers must stress the relevance of what students are learning to real and current events. The school curriculum should be designed by
teachers to respond to the experiences and needs of
the students. Since students learn effectively through
social interaction, schools should plan for substantial social interaction in their curricula. Students should be active participants in the learning process, involved in democratic class decision makingadn reflective thinking. "Quotes" Progressivism is described as a Student centered/permissive philosophy of education.
This philosophy organizes the schools around the concerns, curiosities and real world experiences of the students to formulate meaningful questions and devise strategies to answer those questions. The answers are discovered through real world experiences. Sometimes referred to as pragmatism-to determine if any idea has merit you test it. Dewey believed people learned best through social interaction in the real world. If the experience had meaning it would endure. Progressivists do not believe the mind can be disciplined by reading the Great Books; therefore, the mind should be trained to analyze experiences thoughtfully and draw conclusions objectively. Students should face an ever changing world using the scientific method: become aware of a problem, define it, propose various hypotheses to solve it, examine the consequences of each hypothesis in light of previous experieces, and test the most likely solution. The progressivist classroom will feature students working in small groups, moving about and talking freely; interest stations would be located throughout the room; the teacher will be walking around the room talking with groups and indivdual students, asking questions and making suggestions.
