The Social, Political, and Public Health Implications Surrounding Gardasil. By: Jessica Foster Mentor: Dr. James Marcum ABSTRACT In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first ever vaccine against the Human Papillomarvirus (HPV). Since then, Gardasil has been the center of media mayhem and political strife on all sides of the spectrum. In this thesis, I trace the path that Gardasil has traced through various news stories and media reports. I will then educate the reader about the prescribing information and dosing regime for the vaccine itself. Finally, I will examine Gardasil's place amongst other required vaccines, bring Merck Phamaceutical's motivation into question, and impart my humble opinion and recommendations on the whole situation, as a young, adult female in college, and one of the main targets of Gardasil's advertising campaigns.
