By: Samantha Howell, Thomas Young, Wendy Antezana, Erin Clingenpeel Dr. Manhattan Daughter of Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre) and Edward Blake (The Comedian).
She is a feminist symbol (from her actions to her outfit).
Only person who can help Dr. Manhattan act human. Utilitarian Background Virtue Ethics Background: Deontologist Rorshach Nite Owl Background Background Written by Alan Moore
Illustrated by Dave Gibbons
Setting is an alternate 1980's reality
Depicts what the world would be like if we had superheroes and superhuman vigilantes
Published in 1986 as a series of
12 comic books and were combined into a graphic novel
with 12 chapters
The Comedian, Rorschach, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias Ozymandias History:
Edward Blake

Father of Laurie Juspeczyk (Silk Spectre number 2)

Tried to rape and later had a consensual relationship
with Sally Jupiter (The original Silk Spectre)

He is a trained assassin

Cold and heartless killer except for when it comes
to his daughter Laurie The Comedian The Comedian ultimately seaks to emulate the evil he's trying to fight.

The joke in his eyes is that everyone is evil in some form or fashion.

He seeks to reflect other peoples' evil in his behavior. This causes him to serve as a direct foil to Rorschach, who sees this but tries to stick to his principles anyway. They're both quite crazy, but Rorschach is more honorable.

Virtue Ethics:

Used by the Government in a Utilitarian way

Does what he wants and does not care about helping people. Ethics Adrian Viedt
Born to German immigrants
Parents died when he was 17
His idol was Alexander the Great
"Smartest man on Earth"
Business man: became wealthy by mass-producing toys of himself
Became known as very charitable
Advanced fighting skills and strength
Superhuman vigilante
Has a pet genetically engineered super-cat named Bubastis
Villian? History: Laurie Juspeczyk
Illegitimate daughter of Edward Blake (The Comedian) and Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre)
Follows in her mothers footsteps and takes over as Silk Spectre
Believes her father was Sally's first husband and does not discover the truth until Dr. Manhattan takes her to Mars and reveals everything
Views the Comedian as a terrible, awful person who tried to rape her mother
Actions are influenced by others
Value is centered on the happiness of Dr. Manhattan
Leaves Dr. Manhattan and moves in with Dan Dreiberg (Nite Owl) and begins to think about things with more clarity Virtue Ethics Resembles her father

Relies on other people
to make decisions for her

Feminist symbol

Continent

Represents the average
human being Dan Dreiberg
Took over after the original retired
Vigilante (Batman like)
Relies more on technology instead of superhuman powers
Retires after the implementation of the Keene Act
Becomes romantically involved with Laurie (Silk Spectre) after she leaves Dr. Manhattan Continent- average person

Reacts to Ozymandias's plan like anyone else would because there was no better solution

Comparison point for both Rorschach and Ozymandias

Saves people from a burning building and breaks Rorschach out of jail, alongside with Laurie (Silk Spectre) Bombs New York City and kills millions of innocent citizens in order to save the United States from a nuclear attack from Russia during the Cold War

Disguises explosion as an "alien attack"Believes his plan will end the Cold War (and it does America and Russia sign a truce)

The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few

Looks only at the consequence of his actions

When the others discover his plan, they are to late to stop it and agree to keep Ozymandias's involvement in the explosion a secret because his plan worked (wanted to keep the peace), except for Rorschach who gets murdered

Kills the Comedian when he finds out his plan which sets the Watchmen story in motion If you do the crime you must be punished
Criminals (all crimes are equal) do not deserve to live
He justifies his actions with the duty to do the right thing
He justifies murdering criminals under the categorical imperative defining evil
"There is good and there is evil, and the eveil must be punished." Walter Kovacs

Born as the son of a drug addicted prostitute and an absentie father referred to as "Charlie"

Put into foster care and lives in a group home after he got into a violent fight with two bullies

Excels at academics and athletics in school Background Leaves school to become a dressmaker for a woman named Kittly Genovese who rejects his dressTwo years later she is brutally raped and killed in front of her apartment while neighbors look onThis leads Walter Kovacs to become Rorschach
Known for being on of the more ruthless vigilantes who always murders his victimsRefuses to retire after the Keene Act (makes vigilantism illegal) and gets unmasked by police
Only one who protests Ozymandias's plan
Murdered by Dr. Manhattan References Moore, A., Wein, L., & Kesel, B. (1986). Watchmen. DC Comics.
