PART TWO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE THOMAS PAINE FRENCH ALLIANCE FEB. 6, 1778 GEORGE WASHINGTON GETS A PROMOTION! *HE BECOMES COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE CONTINENTAL (AMERICAN) ARMY "COMMON SENSE" JUNE 15, 1775 *THIS PUTS HIM FIRST IN COMMAND OF THE ENTIRE ARMY - WHO HOLDS THIS POSITION NOW? JAN. 15, 1776 *SPOKE OUT AGAINST THE BR GOVT AND THE ROYAL MONARCHY *IT WAS THE 1ST BOOK TO OPENLY PUSH FOR INDEPENDENCE FROM BR *WAS WRITTEN IN VERNACULAR THAT THE COMMON AMERICAN COULD UNDERSTAND *BY APRIL THERE WERE 120,000 COPIES IN CIRCULATION *IT CALLED FOR THE FORMATION OF AN INDEPENDENT GOVT *HOW CAN YOU EXPECT FOREIGN SUPPORT WHEN YOU ARE DECLARING YOUR LOYALTY TO KING GEORGE III IN BR? *FR HAD BEEN HUMILIATED IN WHICH WAR BY BR? *...SO THEY WERE IMMIDIATE IN THEIR SUPPORT OF THE COLONIES AGAINST THE BR KING *THEY SIGNED A TREATY OF ALLIANCE ON 2/6/1778. THIS GAVE THE ASSURANCE OF MILITARY SUPPORT FROM THE FR UNTIL THE WAR ENDED JULY 4, 1776 *ADOPTED BY THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS ON 7-4-1776 *IT STATED THAT THE 13 COLONIES WERE INDEPENDENT FROM GB *WRITTEN BY THOMAS JEFFERSON *CONGRESS APPROVED THE DOCUMENT ON JULY 4TH, WHICH BECAME THE US INDEPENDENCE DAY *56 DELEGATES OF THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS SIGNED IT ON AUG 2 Created By: Olivia Root BATTLE OF TRENTON 12-25-1776 *WASHINGTON AND TROOPS CROSS THE DELAWARE RIVER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT TO SURPRISE THE HESSIANS *BATTLE OCCURS IN THE MORNING OF 12-26-1776 *THE HESSIANS LOST 1,400 HESSIANS AND SUPPLIES, THE COLONISTS LOST LESS THAN 10 SOLDIERS BATTLE OF SARATOGA OCT. 17, 1777 *TURNING POINT OF THE WAR *SERIES OF BATTLES - GEN. GATES V. GEN BURGOYNES *GATES AND ARNOLD DEFEAT THE REDCOATS *THE REST OF THE WORLD BEGINS TO TAKE THE COLONISTS SERIOUSLY *START GETTING ALLIANCES WITH OTHER NATIONS VALLEY FORGE WINTER 1777-1778 *WASHINGTON'S ARMY WAS STUCK FOR THE WINTER PROBLEMS:

3. NO PAY *BECAUSE OF THESE CONDITIONS 1/4 OF THE SOLDIERS DIE *SOME SOLDIERS DESERT THE ARMY *FINALLY CALL FOR HELP, RECEIVE HELP FROM PRUSSIA - TEACH ARMY HOW TO MARCH, GET INTO FORMATION AND HAVE DRILLS
