Previously the media was
controlled by the government
. Not all information are open for public, thus public has very limited access to information because the media has very limited news and mostly only contain government’s agenda.

The 1998
"reformasi"
(reform) phase became a turning point after which media businesses started to flourish.

The growth of the media industry in Indonesia has been driven by capital interest, leading to a media
oligopoly
and the
concentration of ownership
.

The advances in media and communication technology have
changed the media industry environment
but have nonetheless opened a wider space for citizens to participate in the media through the internet and
social media
.
The History
The Journalists
Today, most of Indonesian journalists have grown more mature and sophisticated in their reporting - although mistakes are still common

"Envelope journalism" still exists but is less rampant

There are nationalist sentiment among some journalists to some extent, e.g. foreign dominance in strategic sectors such as banking

‘Field Experts’ are gradually emerging as there are now a wide variety of categories (e.g. travel, oil & gas, SMEs, automotive, lifestyle, technology, etc.)

Junior reporters covers general topics and are rotated from one desk to another

Many journalists have their own blogs and social media accounts

Twitter, Facebook and other social network platforms may trigger a journalist to develop news.
