Transcript of RTI CASE ANALYSIS AND STAR SHEET ASSIGNMENT

ASSIGNMENT

A)
Discuss Alejandro’s lack of progress and his academic struggles at the Tier 1 intervention level. Clarify the goal graph and the progress monitoring methods- Vanderbilt University Passage Reading Fluency probe as a way of tracking his growth over the last seven weeks. Explain, “Students learn more when teachers implement progress monitoring. (Safer & Fleischman, 2005)”.

BACKGROUND
Alejandro is a second-grade student in Ms. Willaby’s class
Alejandro scored below the benchmark on the universal screening
Ms. Willaby has been monitoring his reading performance using the Vanderbilt Passage Reading Fluency probe for the last six weeks
She will need to determine whether Alejandro is making adequate progress in the general education classroom (i.e., Tier 1 instruction)
She has scheduled a meeting with Alejandro’s parents to discuss his progress and would like to illustrate his performance with his progress monitoring graph.
Assignment
Alejandro read a total of 36 words per minute on Week 7 Probe
He made a total of 8 miscues or errors
This gives him a total score of 28 words per minute. See chart below Alejandro’s Progress Monitoring Scores
ASSIGNMENT
The probe used to test Alejandro is the Vanderbilt University Passage Reading Fluency: The student reads a passage aloud for one minute.
The passage’s difficulty is based on the student’s expected end-of-year reading competence
The score is the number of words he or she read correctly per minute
This test must be administered to each student individually
This probe is used for students’ Mid-First grade through sixth grade
Alejandro is not meeting the established goal of 37 words per minute by Week 7, as his only reading 28 words per minute by Week 7
His progress is slow and he is averaging an increase of 1 word per minute weekly
ASSIGNMENT
ASSIGNMENT
The week 7 benchmark for this measure is 37 words read correctly in one minute
Plot this benchmark and create a goal line for Alejandro on the graph

Level C • Case 1

ASSIGNMENT

B)
Discuss that without further intensive interventions such as moving him to Tier 2 he will lag further and further behind his peers. Rationalize, “Progress monitoring data are strongly predictive of student achievement on state and local standardized achievement tests. (Good, Simmons, & Kameenue, 2001)”. Indicate that at the Tier 2 level of intervention he will receive instruction in small groups with a more intense and targeted level of instruction.

QUESTION 5:
DISCUSSION WITH PARENTS

ASSIGNMENT

C)
Discuss whether or not English is Alejandro’s first or second language. He may be lagging behind because he is not receiving the correct probe or curriculum based measurement. If he is an ELL student then the probe needs to be administered in his native language and he should be revaluated. This might make a difference in not only his actual scores, but it may make a difference in his overall rate of growth and attainment.
