Quantum Numbers Quantum numbers are used to describe an electron in an orbit or atomic orbital. Principal Quantum Number (n) Principal Quantum Number describes the electron shell.It designates the energy level of each atomic orbital in which the electron moves. It also determines the average distance of electron from the nucleus. Azimuthal
or
Angular Momentum Quantum Number
(l) Azimuthal or Angular Momentum quantum numbers describes the shape of the orbital whether it is s,p,d, or p and this tells the sublevel to which the electron belong.
Orbitals have shapes that are best described as :
spherical (l = 0)
polar (l = 1)
cloverleaf (l= 2)
They can even take on more complex shapes as the value of the angular quantum number becomes larger. The Magnetic Quantum Number
(ml) Magnetic Quantum Number describes the orientation in space of a particular orbital.
Value of ml depends on the value of 1 and may range from -1 to +1 including zero. Electron Spin Quantum Number
(ms) Electron Spin quantum numbers specifies the way the electron spin or rotates either:
counterclockwise
clockwise
on its axis as it moves within the orbital.This takes only two values:
+ 1/2
- 1/2
Important rules for the
Quantum Numbers The quantum numbers are integers except for ms.
The lowest value that the pricipal quantum number,n, may have is 1.
The highest value that the azimuthal quantum number, 1, may depend on n. It can have a value from 0 to n-1.
The magnetic quantum number, ml, can be any integer from -1 to +1.
The spin quantum number, ms, can only be +1/2 or -1/2. No other values are acceptable.
