Make the most of your choices
Think about your motivations. What are they? What motivations can you harness to make the information seem "Useful"?
Your motivations help you determine the level of challenge you're comfortable with. Find ways to adjust the challenges you have to suit you.
You learn best in a state of "relaxed alertness" - some stress helps you focus, but too much stress is too distracting. What's the level of stress you need to perform?
Don't forget to take care of yourself physically. This is one of the easiest ways to keep your stress level manageable.
When you are fully engaged in learning, you can enter a "flow state" when you lose track of everything else and become completely focused in what you're learning.
What learning activities and courses completely engage you? Is there a way to use your learning style or one of your multiple intelligences to engage yourself in something you don't enjoy?
Looking forward to what you're going to learn can help you feel more engaged. What do you think the professor might do in class next week?
Think about what you can learn, not about who's teaching it - every professor has knowledge, but not every professor is a great communicator.
Part of being a learner is becoming comfortable with being confused...but then using that confusion as a motivator.
Questions indicate INTEREST, not IDIOCY!
Your goals and motivations can give you personal meanings for every course and even every assignment, as long as you look for it.
Remember the "Circle of Learning" - seemingly unrelated classes and disciplines connect. Find the patterns and connections and you'll find it much easier to learn.
Your emotions can be helpful when learning, but you need to evaluate them. Hating or loving a class may not always be in your best interest.
Make an honest effort to change your negative attitude. How?
1. Know that you always have choices - even if the only choice is to view the situation differently.
2. Take responsibility for your own results - don't blame others.
3. State the positive rather than the negative - no more "can't" and "won't"!
4. Bring in positive messages - no more "garbage in, garbage out".
5. Choose to learn from your mistakes and setbacks - turn "learning points into turning points".
6. Acknowledging your blessings can lead to a much more positive outlook.
Don't just memorize the facts. Connect what you're learning to what you learned before and build a strong foundation for new knowledge.
Construction is hard work. Remember that you're not just building knowledge, but building yourself.
Where is your mind going when you're not learning? Try and figure out what you're learning unconsciously and move it into your conscious mind - you may learn more.
Unintentional/unconscious learning is still learning! Learning can happen anywhere.
You will always have some degree of choice no matter what class you're in. It's up to you to make the most of each choice.
Accept feedback, whether good or bad, about what you've done. If feedback isn't automatically given, ask for it anyway.
