RECAP: Last time in history we learnt that:
Germany became a Republic after WW1
The Treaty of Versailles was harsh, Weimar was hated for signing it
A very democratic Constitution but weak government
economic problems- hyperinflation
PUTSCHES from the left and right
Stresemann restored Germany's economy and its international standing but..
there were still problems of unemployment, weak government, extreme parties and US loans
Hitler blamed the Jews and Communists for WW1
Hitler took control of the NSDAP by 1920
By 1924 it had over 50 000 members and a private army - the SA
in 1923 Hitler and the NSDAP launched the Munich Putsch
Hitler was jailed and the party banned but it made him famous and allowed him time to change tactics and write Mein Kampf
between 1924-29 the party was reorganised and better funded (Krupp)
propaganda was clear, modern and made use of new technology
SA grew to 400000 and the SS was begun
bought its own newspaper but
received 2.8% of vote in 1928 (12 MP's)

the government cut benefit and raised taxes but its response was weak
people lost their savings and homes - terrible poverty
The Nazis offered different messages to different groups - hope and strong leadership
jobs for workers - smash communists for M/C, big business, farmers
protect the family for women
clear simple messages of discipline, leadership, anti-Jews, scrap the T of V, expand Germany
people turned from the old parties to the NSDAP and KPD - the workers favoured the KPD but those with something to lose turned to the NSDAP
