Meteoroids, Meteors and Meteorites
Transcript of Meteoroids, Meteors and Meteorites
-Small bodies of rock that travel through space
-Leftover materials from the formation of the solar system
-Smaller than atom, larger than a few meters in diameter
-Amount of heat is proportional to surface area
-22,000 tons fall each year -motion from gravatational pull between planets Meteors Meteorites Meteorites
-A meteor that crashed into Earth's surface.
-Only occurs when meteor is big enough to survive the passage through Earth's atmosphere
- Made from impacts of asteroid and from meteoroids
-Thought to be cause of extinction of dinosours.
-Recovered meteorites are called falls. All others are called finds. Meteor Shower -When Earth passes throught the tail of a comet -Measured in meteors per. hour Meteoroids Meteoroids
-A meteoroid is a small body of rock that travels through space.
-A meteoroid is from leftover materials from the formation of the solar system.
-It is smaller than an atom, and larger than a few meters in diameter.
-Amount of heat is porportional to surface area
-22,000 tons fall each year
-Motion caused by gravatational pull between planets. Meteor Showers Meteors come in sizes as small as a grain of sand, and the biggest reach the size of a boulder. There has been meteorite impacts such as the Arizona Crater and the Chicxulub Crater. Meteors often occur in the mesophere. A fireball is a brighter than usual meteor, it may be brighter than most planets. A meteor may be various colors depending on the chemical composition as it travels through the atmosphere. A tektite is a natural glass rock formed by impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. They are only a few centimeters in size. As a Meteor travels through Earth's surface, it heats up and causes a streak following the meteor. Meteor
-A meteor is a meteoroid that enters the Earth's atmosphere
-Millions of meteors enter
the Earth's surface each day
-They are formed from leftovers of first formation of the solar system
- The pull between planets effects it's motion.
-As it comes into Earth's atmosphere, it becomes very hot due to friction.
-Also called a shooting star
-Measured in meteors per. hour There are 3 main types of meteorites. There are stony (made from rocks), iron (made from iron) and stony-iron (made from metal and rocks). Where Meteors/Meteoroids/Meteorites Occur
