This book is structured around flashbacks and facts about jellyfish. This book is also set up as if it were a science project, with parts of the book titled "hypothesis", "procedures", and "backgrounds." These parts help with the science elements of the book, making it flow more evenly.

Writers Craft
Ali Benjamin writes in a very distinct way. She combines humor, tradgedy, and happiness and weaves it together into a perfect and very fun to read story.
Theme

I think the major theme in this story is to keep moving on and to never give up. This theme is expressed in how Suzy keeps pursuing her research and how every setback encourages her even more to keep going.
The Thing about Jellyfish
By Ali Benjamin
Summary
Suzy is just a normal girl, that is, until her best friend drowns while on vacation. Overcome by grief, Suzy decides that she will not speak anymore, unless she has to. But while Suzy is on a field trip to a local aquarium, she makes an exciting discovery that could be the answer to all her problems and questions about the real reason that Franny drowned. Through a series of flashbacks and stories from her everyday life, Suzy tells her point of view on Franny's death.
The text features in this book include parts (part 1, 2, 3, etc.), quotes from other characters from the beginning of each part, sketches of jellyfish, acknowledgments , and an authors note.
The point of view of this book is from Suzy's perspective. She is very quirky, funny, and quiet, but as you continue reading she starts to come out of her shell and slowly becomes stronger in her actions and words.

This is the Irukandji jellyfish, which is the cuprit of Franny's death. The actual of size of the jellyfish is only one centimeter, making it the one of the smallest jellies, and most venomous jellyfish in the world.
