What is SketchUp
good for?

light, airy, almost skeletal designs
(makes the part cheaper to print)

Establishing Default
Settings

1. Download and install
SketchUp
MAKE

(NOT Pro)
http://www.sketchup.com/download
2. Open SketchUp
MAKE

3. Click on Template
and select the last one
"3D Printing - Millimeters"
It has a plain background
and shadows turned off
4. Go to Window > Styles
5. choose "Default Styles", then "3D Printing Style"
6. Click on the "Edit" tab in the "Styles" dialog box. Then click on the "Face Settings" tab.
7. Click on the box beside "Back Color" to open the colors box. Select a bright color like orange.
All faces in SketchUp have a
"front"
and
"back"
, so changing the back color to be a bright color will help you to quickly spot any surfaces that need to be reversed.
8. Click on the
Update Style with changes
button at the top right of the
Styles
dialogue box and then close the
Styles
Window.
All front faces of surfaces have to point out, and all back faces have to point inside the model, or it won't
print correctly
.
To reverse a face, right-click and select
Reverse Faces
.
If you later need to change the units of measurement to inches, go to
Window
>
Model Info
>
Units
.
9. Navigate to
Window
>
Model Info
>
Statistics
and click on
Purge Unused
.

10. Go to
File
>
Save As Template
and save it with the file name
"3D Printing mm"
. Make sure
Set as Default
is checked before saving.

To minimize a dialog box, just click on the top of its window once, and it will roll up so only its name is visible.
Installing & Using Extensions
Go to

Extensions Warehouse
Sign in with your Google account...
Search for
STL
and click on
"SketchUp STL"
by the SketchUp Team.
Click on the red
Install
button.
It will ask you to accept the Terms and Conditions - check the box and click
Confirm
.
