Niconico douga is one of those video sharing websites, but it is not merely a common video sharing website like YouTube.
Although YouTube is an interactive website, Niconico has an incredible and increasing presentation in participation. It seems give its users entire freedom to express themselves. And on the basis of contemporary technology, Niconico shows an image of maxium participation we can have.
The success of Niconico in Asia can be explained by Howard Rheingold's (2010) social media literacies. In this prezi, I would introduce and analyze Niconico in the perspectives of participation, collaboration and network awareness.

What is Niconico?
1. Comments.
Nico
has a
different usage of comments

with the
viewer—creating a sense of a shared watching

According to this new form of
adding comments:

Communication between users become more active becaus

Also, users can find interesting comments easily sin

2. Tags

Niconico offers tagging of
videos. Tags may be
edited by any user,

not just the uploader. Eac
h video may have up
to ten tags, of which up to five may be op
tionally locked by th
e uploader, but all others may be edited by any
user. Frequently the

3. Localization
Japan is famous with its OTAKU culture
Otaku,
the notoriously obsessive fans of
manga, anime, video games, and other
forms of Japanese popular culture.
Localization

Niconico is one of the majority ways for Otaku to communicate with each other because majority of videos are talking about animation in the beginning.
Niconico is also a platform of virtual singers like Hatsune Miku, they are not real person but virtual images and their songs are totally made by electronic technology.

4. Globalization
Niconico does not have any location boundaries. If you have
the account, then you can use it. so Niconico users are not only Japanese people.

Influence of increasing participation
The highly participation is contributed by a
balance among digitalization,localization and
globalization.
Websites like YouTube make information senders active but information receiver’s activity is limited. However, I say niconico makes receivers as active as senders because Niconico provides a platform that information receivers can become information creators.
This is a result of digitalization.

We can refer this phenomenon to Rheingold's attention literacy.
Majority of Niconico users concentrate their attention on animation and they devote themselves into an online life Niconico offered.
In other words, Niconico distracts people's attention from reality to a virtual world.
However, due to technology development and an increasing participation, the boundary between reality and virtuality is blurred.

It's a sign of the culture of real virutulity and a sign of new media.

The Internet decides the essential difference between old media and new media.
The new media (Internet) ensures that users can express their opinions about the information contents and those contents can be seen by other users at the same time.
Old (broadcast, analogue, or unidirectional) media such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and books follows a model that one sender sends information to plently of receivers while receivers' comments hardly present to the sender.
New (interactive, digital) media such as instant messaging, text messages, Facebook, and Twitter provides a platform of communication.

link: http://www.nicovideo.jp
Basically, Internet is the technology that enables users to be active. And according to Rheingold (2010), "when you participate, you become an active citizen rather than simply a passice consumer of what is sold to you." (p.18). So participation allows different social media sites to be active users rather than passive users.
However, Niconico has a stronger presentation in participation than common video sharing websites.
A strong presenation in participation can be concluded in several ways.

So, Niconico provides a platform for Otaku and since there are more Otaku, there are more Niconico users and vice versa.
As increasing people increasingly active participate into an online
world, the boundary between reality and virtuality is blurred due to an affect of attention and technology.

An increasing participation in Niconico also causes an increasing collaboration
The highly participation in Niconico raises network awareness as well.
This literac

Because of the creation of Internet, people coul

g to the
increasing participation in Nic

users is increasing at
the same time.
Conclusively, in my view, Niconico.jp is a website having great characters of new media and at the same time, it also creates its own unique way of presenting those characters. The highly participation, great collaboration and increasing official network awaress are these characters and they may provide some future images. All in all, there is no doubt that Niconico helps Japan develop its subcultures, and surely, in the future, subcultures will be created, promoted and wideshared in a cyberworld. The relationship between human and media will be closer.
