Communication Process
—Describe the value of effective communication and its various elements.
Educational Goal:
1. Comprehend the elements of the communication process
and
2. respond positively to how it applies to their personal and professional goals.
Objectives:
Cognitive:
—Explain the elements of the communication process, the best communication approach (transaction), and internal and external barriers.
—Define effective communication.
Affective:
A good working definition for effective communication is to share meaning and understanding between the person sending the message and the person receiving the message. The key element is “understanding.”

Was there a miscommunication because of a lack of understanding?
The communication process is a simple model that demonstrates all the factors that can affect communication. Communication is effective if the message that is received is the same one that is sent.

A. Sender
Determining Factors:
or "encoder," the person who is sending the message
1. communicator’s attitude (it must be positive)
2. communicator’s selection of meaningful symbols (selecting the right symbols depends on your audience and the right environment)

the person receiving the message, making sense of it, or understanding and translating it into meaning
2. effective communication takes place with shared meaning and understanding
1. communication is only successful when the reaction of the receiver is that which the sender intended
D. Feedback
the final link in the chain of communication after the receiving and interpreting of a message, the feedback is a verbal or nonverbal reaction or response by the receiver
1. external feedback (something we can see or hear)
2. internal feedback (silence, self-examination, or something we can't see)
B. Message
a communication or transmission in speech, in writing (verbal or nonverbal), or by signals, also called the "medium"
a shared understanding of symbols, for instance the meaning of words, is crucial for effective communication
for example, your boss asks you to send her a "bimonthly" report--how often does she need it?
after "encoding" the message, the sender transmits the message through an appropriate "medium"
after your boss asks you for a "bimonthly" report, you know that "bimonthly" means a "fortnight," or
twice a month
you know "bimonthly" also means
once every two months
for the communication process to work effectively, giving your boss feedback to clarify when she wants her report is crucial
3. feedback allows the communicator to adjust his message to be more effective if necessary
Barriers
there are two types of barriers
1. internal barriers:
 fatigue
 poor listening skills
 attitude toward the sender or the information
 lack of interest in the message
 fear
 mistrust
 past experiences
 negative attitude
 problems at home
 lack of common experiences
 emotions

2. external barriers
 noise
 environment
 sender used too many unclear words for the audience
 time of day
 bad phone/internet connections
 distractions
monitor the receiver for shifts in body language
barriers keep the message from getting through
ask questions and listen
check to make sure the message the receiver received is the one sent

Conclusion
Effective communication is a major part in achieving your educational, professional, and personal goals.
Acquiring effective communication skills will help you be a better student, parent, family member, worker, and citizen.
You can improve your communication skills by observing people who communicate effectively, learning new skills, and practicing those skills.
Effective Communication is, at least, a two-way process.
Your instructors, supervisors, and peers will send you messages that will require you to engage with them and communicate by speaking, listening actively, and observing.
Use the communication process model to effectively communicate with at least three people.

6. Finally, evaluate yourself as a participant of the communication process, and use at least three specific examples to demonstrate effective or ineffective communication.
