August 6, 1928
Andy’s childhood home that he lived in for 15 years.
When Andy was in third grade, he developed a medical condition called CHOREA.
Stricken by disease
His artistic side begins to develop
as a young boy...
What is Chorea?
A disorder that attacks the nervous system causing involuntary movements.
His disease caused him to become an outcast in school.
When he was forced to stay in bed, he would draw, listen to the radio, and surround himself with pictures of movie stars.
He would also CREATE ART with his mother.
Warhol later stated that he realized this childhood stage was very important to his development as a person, artistic skills, and artistic preferences.
Then, he went on to college at the Carnegie Institute of Technology
He graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.
Warhol graduated from Schenley High School in 1945.
After completing college, Warhol moved to New York City where he jump started his career in magazine illustration and advertising.
Andy Warhol became famous for his Blotted Line Technique!
How it worked
Warhol would tape two pieces of paper together and draw with an old fountain pen on one sheet of paper. Then, before the ink dried, he would press both sheets of paper together. This would create the effect of irregular lines. Finally, Warhol would add a splash of color with watercolor.
Andy experimented with this technique in college. He then brought it with him to New York City where he used it to create I. Miller shoe advertisements that were featured in the New York Times. He was also an advertising illustrator for Barneys, Glamour Magazine, Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co. and Harper’s Bazaar.
The I.Miller shoes advertisements were Warhol’s attempt to modernize the company’s image through his bright, innovative graphic design.
The blotted-technique became Warhol’s trademark.
The 1960s began a new era in art called [POP ART]
Andy Warhol became an iconic figure of the Pop Art Era.
Artists would use everyday modern products of the time as their subject.
Subjects included: famous people, advertising, news, comics.. anything that exemplified the culture of the time.
This movement paved the way for the product labeling and logos currently used in advertising.
In 1959 Warhol collaborated with Suzie Frankfurt to create the wild raspberries recipe book drawings.

This technique allows him to reproduce an image almost an infinite number of times.
Warhol creates a series of portraits, his most famous being Marilyn Monroe.
Warhol continues to experiment with silk screen canvases and produces 100 Cans.
He painted these cans in an effort for consumers to realize how the cans were designed to grab their attention at a grocery store.
When looked at closely, the cans are not identical or evenly spaced.
Why the Repetition?
To show how these subjects dominated American society.
Warhol once again selects selects an icon that is mass produced and consumed during the time.
"What's great about this country is that Americans started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see a Coca-Cola, and you can know that the President drinks Coke, Liz Taylor drinks Coke, and just think, you can drink Coke, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke."
Warhol was so obsessed with mass production that he named his art studio
Warhol actually ran his studio similar to a factory.
on several occasions, he would leave his assistants instructions and leave the art work to them.
This was the beginning of mass production at The Factory.
famous celebrities would often drop by his studio.
Warhol's most famous and controversial sculptures are:

Warhol painted and silk screened the boxes and made them identical to the real store boxes. the boxes did not sell well, and had the public wondering whether this was real art.
Warhol designed the album cover of the Velvet Underground & Nico Band
Early copies of the album invited the owner to "Peel Slowly and See."
Peeling back the banana skin revealed a flesh-color banana underneath.
the drawings were colored in by his friends at the "coloring parties" that he often held.
The recipes were all a joke. For example in the "Piglet" recipe it stated:
"Contact Trader Vic's and order a 40 pound suckling pig to serve 15. Have Hanley take the Carey Cadillac to the side entrance and receive the pig at exactly 6:45. Rush home immediately and place on the open spit for 50 minutes. Remove and garnish with fresh crab apples."
Famous silk-screening technique
Warhol painted it in a way to minimize his human qualities.
Valerie Solanas shoots Warhol outside of the Factory due to his objection against Richard Nixon. This forever changed Warhol's persona, and he began to obsess with documenting his life. He published 3,400 tapes that described his everyday activities.
The traumatic attempt to end his life did notslow down his output of art. He continued to produce just as good as ever before.
He developed a strong business in commissioned portraits, becoming highly sought after for his brilliantly-colored paintings of politicians, entertainers, sports figures, writers, debutantes and heads of state
While in Milan, Warhol attended the opening of the exhibition of The Last Supper paintings. He complained of severe pain in his right side. After delaying a hospital visit, he was eventually convinced by his doctors to check into New York Hospital for gall bladder surgery.
On February 22, 1987, while in recovery from this routine operation, Andy Warhol died.

Warhol put together contrasting subject matters into one piece: religious imagery and products from advertisements in order to create a new meaning.
The price tag represents the price that Jesus paid for our sins.
the Honda motorcycle's logo which is a wing, represents an angel wing
and the eye, which was originally the logo for Wise potato chips, became reinterpreted by Warhol as the “all-seeing eye”.
