Most popular during 19th Century (1800s)
Modeled roughly after First Period English houses
Why were they popular in the U.S. at this time?
Often located on plantations
Size accounted for many people living in one colonial house (slaves & servants)
What are the unique characteristics of the design of the house?
Very big, had porches on each floor
Large pillars surrounding front
Big, round circular driveways (in many cases)
Very many windows
Symmetrical
Are there any famous houses that are the same style?
George and Martha Washington's house in Virginia
