What is Therapeutic Recreation?
What does the term Therapeutic mean?
According to Medline Plus (http://www.nlm.nih.gov), the term 'Therapeutic' is defined as, "Of or relating to the treatment of disease or disorders..."
What does the term "Recreation" mean?
Refreshment of one's mind or body after work through activity that amuses or stimulates; play
The National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS) defines Therapeutic Recreation as:

"Practiced in clinical, residential, and community settings, the profession of Therapeutic Recreation uses treatment, education, and recreation services to help people with illnesses, disabilities, and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that enhance their health, independence, and well-being."

Geriatrics, Adults, Young Adults, Adolescents with behavioral health issues, with developmental disabilities, addictions, pediatrics.
Inpatient hospitals, Residential facilities, Mental health centers, Adult Day programs, Substance abuse centers, Hospice care, Community centers, and school systems.
Additionally, camps, forensic facilities (prisons, juvenile hall), and private practice
Therapeutic Recreation Vs. Recreation for Special populations
Recreation for Special Populations is simply just that, people who have disabilities or limitations, being encouraged to participate in recreation to improve their health.

Therapeutic Recreation is a type of therapy in which assessments are used to set a bench mark to measure whether there is any progression/regression for the client. Goals are established to be met, and recreation is used as a form of treatment.
In Therapeutic Recreation we follow a process called APIE. (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation).
This is what makes Therapeutic Recreation different from Recreation for Special Populations.
