Ligers Also known as Tigons By: Jada Brumfield The liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a she-tiger; however, a hybrid cross between a male tiger and a lioness is a tigon. Ligers typically grow larger than either parent species, unlike tigons which tend to be about as large as a female tiger. What are ligers? This picture show a baby liger compared his brother: When this cub is three, he could be more than 700 lb, and years after that he will be the same size as his brother. The End!! I'm 4 week old !!! The World's Largest Cats: Ligers have a tiger-like striping pattern that is very faint and a lion-like tawny background. Ligers have a huge body structure. They have bigger and stronger bones than their parents. They also have bigger teeth. The mouth of the ligers is as big as the shoulders of a man. It enjoy swimming, like tigers, and are very sociable like lions. Ligers grow about 1 lb per day, that by the time baby ligers reaches their first birthday, they are expected to weigh more than 364 lb. First liger in the world was born in India. Ligers are not born in the wild. The first liger which was born in 1799 in India had its painting as well. The painting evidence indicates that first ever liger offspring occurred in the sub-continent soil which currently include Pakistan and India. This could also indicate that the first ever liger cub was born during the eighteenth century. This would also indicate the fact that this would have happened under the ruling of the British in India. By that time, there would be plenty of tigers and lions living in the jungles of India. Most Ligers that have been bred, have been by accident. History of Ligers: The difference of appearance Male Female Male Female 8B The cub would be the size of this in less than 6-5 years There are currently more than 30 ligers in the United States. Male There is no doubt about it that
currently, there are no ligers
in the wild. All the ligers are in
captivity and their numbers
range from minimum of 10 to
maximum of 100 . According to Dr. Antle, there is a one in a billion chance in the wild that a tiger and a lion would mate. Tigers and lions are naturally big enemies of one another. If they will meet face to face, they will try to kill each other. Reason There Is No Wild Ligers: Ligers longevity: Ligers live for about 10 to 13 years.
This is true but a large amount of
ligers are older then the ones that
died younger because they contract
a disease or are over fed. The longest
lived liger, which is 24 years, is named Shasta. There are numerous reports of mothers rejecting her hybrid cubs all together. Two rejected cubs was nursed by a dog, who had a puppies of her own. Most of the liger's mother recieved
a C-section delivery, due to the size
of the cub. Newborn liger cubs tend to be
bigger than tiger and lion cubs. Jungle Island, an interactive animal theme park in Miami, is home to a liger named Hercules, the largest non-obese liger, who is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest living cat on Earth, weighing over 904 lb. Hercules was featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, Anderson Cooper 360, Inside Edition and in a Maxim article in 2005, when he was only 3 years old and already weighed 900 lb. Hercules is completely healthy and is expected to live a long life. The cat's breeding is said to have been a complete accident. The first liliger is named liliger The liliger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a ligress. The first hybrid was born on September 2012 at the Novosibirsk Zoo, Russia. Kiara According to Dr. Antle, a liger in a single sitting is capable of eating more than 100 pounds of meat. But this might not be a healthy feed for a liger as it will make the liger fat and obese. Usually the zoo keepers give ligers about 20 to 25 pounds of meat a day. But a liger wouldn't mind eating more than 100 pounds on a one single day. This can also be dangerous as well, as in the many studies, many ligers died because of the over-feeding. What does Ligers eat ? Sources: -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liger
