Market pull and technology push The development of a design can be triggered in one of two ways. It can be the result of a social need for a product known as "market pull", or it can be due to the result of advances in materials and manufacturing technology, known as "technology push" MarketPull
This is true problem solving.

First there is a need /demand for new products. Its up to designer's to use their creativity to think of new ways to solve the problem. Materials and manufacturing techniques may not even exist but designer's are required to have the vision to come up with ideas that will solve all these problems.
Between 1957 and 1975 Russia and America began the exploration of space. The technology to explore space did not even exist, the two countries raced to ensure that their country was first. This became known as "The Space Race" Activity Make a list of all the products you can think of that have been developed as a result of "Market Pull" As we manufacture and consume greater numbers of everyday products we are causing enironmetal problems for our planet. We are using up all of are natural resources and polluting our atmosphere. This is a major concern and has led to a huge market pull for more environmentally friendly products to be made. Technology Push

Most companies have an research & development
department(R&D), where designers and engineers work to improve materials and manufacturing technology. They hope new technologies to improve their product range. The mobile phone is one excellent example of the use of new technology.
