High School Dropouts How are high school dropouts related to crime? How are high school dropouts related to crime? How do high school dropouts affect the economy? What is the reason for kids to drop out of high school? How does Ohio rank against other states in high school dropout rates? In the U.S., 65% of convicts are dropouts According to the Buckeye Institute of Ohio, prisons around Ohio would collectively save over $10 milllion if no high school dropouts were incarcerated. "Unless high schools are able to graduate their students at higher rates, more than 12 million students will drop out during the course of the next decade. The result will be a loss to the nation of more than $3 trillion" (High School Dropouts in America). Dropouts make up nearly half the heads on welfare. Students that come from families with a lower income are more likely to drop out of high school. Low attendance and failing grades have been proven to be a big reason students drop out of high school. Ohio is ranked 15th among The United States.
