Logical Fallacies: Arguments that may sound convincing, but that don't make sense when we look closer at them.
Latin for "to the man"
When people use Ad Hominem, they attack the speaker/writer instead of the idea.
Billy says that vegetables are good for you, but that can't be true because he's fat.
Mr. Chappell doesn't know anything about English because he spells werdz wrong sometimes.
Eight out of ten doctors believe that acupuncture works, so it must!
Most people during the dark ages believed that demons caused plagues.
My stomach hurt after I ate some carrots. Therefore, carrots make your stomach hurt.
I had to go to school after I ate breakfast this morning. Therefore, eating breakfast makes people go to school.
If we make laws to control who can buy guns in our country, eventually all the other countries in the world will join forces and attack America because nobody knows how to use a gun, and we wouldn't be able to fight back, and we would all start speaking a mix between Russian and Chinese.

When writing warrants for your essays, be sure to avoid these fallacies. This will make sure that your reasoning is logical and is convincing to everyone.

Have you ever been told something, and believed it, only to discover later that it wasn't true? The legend of Santa Clause is a generalized example of this. What were you told? How did you react once you discovered that you had been deceived? How did it make you feel? Why?
