Art Integration

:
students will analyze a photo of their chosen and write a background story to it.

(written art): students will write a poem (style of their choosing) about what they've learned regarding the Holocaust or Anne Frank.

students will create a cube and decorate it with various items.

:
"The Diary of Anne Frank" version that we read is in a play version therefore the students get a chance to put their flare in it.
Step One:
Introduction to Holocaust and Anne Frank
Students will be introduced to various types of information on the Holocaust. We will discuss the events surrounding the rise of Hilter and the Nazis. (This information is very important to them understanding Anne Frank and her situation.
Unit Objectives
In this unit students will:
investigate the circumstances surrounding the Holocaust.
conduct research on causes and outcomes of WWII and the Holocaust
read "The Diary of Anne Frank" in the play version
create several projects to demonstrate their understanding of concepts taught
Step Two:

Step Three: Student Research
Students will conduct their own research on the Holocaust before we begin reading.

We now begin reading the play version of, "The Diary of Anne Frank."
The students get to choose their parts (which we rotate everyday) and act them out as we read.
Step Five: Project time
Students must complete the following projects as a part of their portfolio at the end of the unit:
1. Photo analysis
2. Poem
3. Collage cube

I allow students some freedom on topics and projects specifics so they feel like they each have something valuable to contribute.

Why?

It’s well-written: people all over the world can identify with Anne.
She’s relatable: she describes precisely what she thought and felt in the Secret Annex, and what it’s like growing up.
The life and death of Anne Frank also give us a glimpse of how terrible the Holocaust was.

Why is Anne Frank so famous?




This is Anne Frank in May 1942. She received a diary as a birthday present. She immediately began to write in it. On the first page she wrote: "I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.

Her diary mainly deals with her time in the "Secret Annex." That is the name people have given to the place where Anne was forced to go into hiding.

Nazi doctors tortured men, women, and children at death camps
Performed experiments on victims
Victims were:
put into pressure chambers
tested with drugs
frozen to death



Camp Doctors

Auschwitz : 25,000 shoes…..one day’s worth of gassings.

Prisoners were forced to do hard labor
Prisoners were starved
Forced to obey the Nazi’s, and were murdered if they disobeyed
Prisoners had no control of their own lives
Many prisoners died as a result of incarceration and maltreatment

Words from Survivors…

After the war, Anne’s father returned to Amsterdam. Anne’s diary had been saved. He thought that he shouldn’t keep its contents to himself, and had it published as a book called The Secret Annex.
Millions of people throughout the world have read the book. Every year, thousands of people come to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank House, where Anne was in hiding.

After the war…

Anne Frank remained in hiding in the Secret Annex for more than two years. The only thing that could really help Anne during these moments was her diary.

Auschwitz was the largest camp during the Holocaust
Prisoners were forced to give up all belongings
Children were often killed upon arrival
Between 1.1 -1.5 million prisoners were murdered here

Holocaust is literally defined as:
“a sacrifice consumed by fire”

But most would define it as:
the mass slaughter of European civilians, especially Jews, by the Nazis during World War II
