10 Interesting Facts about Glaciers!
This is a video showing a Glacier breaking in Alaska.
-Glaciers are masses of ice and
snow that have been built up
over thousands of years.
-They occur in high altitudes of
mountains, and on lands near the
-Glaciers store huge amounts of snow
-Glaciers are always on the move,
since it flows as the weight of new snow and ice on the side pushes the whole glacier downward. It moves down because of the pull of gravity.
There are three types of Glaciers that are classified as: Continental, Alpine and Piedmont.
Continental Glaciers: A glacier that spreads out from a central mass of ice. This type of Glacier forms in extremely cold climates; which is located in the North and South Poles.
Piedmont Glaciers: A large valley glacier meant to form almost a sheet of ice. They are located in cold climates and form at the foot of mountains.
Types of Glaciers
Alpine Glaciers: A glacier that moves down from a high valley. It forms at high elevations where temperatures are below freezing throughout the year. It moves downhill to lower elevations when snowfall is heavy.

What are Glaciers?
Glaciers are big, slow moving masses of river or ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains. Glaciers store about 75% of the Earth's fresh water.
How are Glaciers Formed?
Glaciers begin to form when the snow that has fallen stays in the same place year-round. When enough snow has fallen it starts to turn into ice. Each year the snow starts to make a new layer making the ice bigger and bigger each time. After a few winters, it starts to form into a Glacier. This process usually takes about 100 years to form.
Where are Glaciers Found?
Glaciers are found in almost every continent, even Africa. Most of the worlds Glaciers are found in Greenland and Antarctica. They are commonly found above the snow line, in areas of high snowfall during the winter and cool temperatures during the summer.
1. Alaska is estimated to have over 100,000 glaciers.
2. A single glacier ice crystal can grow to be the size of a baseball.
3. On steep slopes, a glacier can be as thin as 50 feet.
4. Mount Kilimanjaro its glaciated, although it sits on the equator.
5. The Antartic ice sheet is actually a glacier and has existed for over 40 million years.
6. A glacier can range in length from the equivalent of a football field to more than 100 miles.
7. Glaciers are found in 47 countries.
8. Glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on the planet, storing an estimated 75 percent of the world’s supply.
9. Approximately 10 percent of the Earth is covered by glaciers.
10. When we look at the iceberg we do not see that only 10% of iceberg is actually above water, while 90% is under water.
Glaciers are something everyone knows about, or do we really? But, we have learned that Glaciers are giant blocks of ice that hold large amounts of the Earth’s freshwater supply. Glaciers melt and move as time goes on, especially as Global Warming continues.

Glaciers can create lakes, fjords, glaciated valleys, and horns. These are landscapes that have shaped the Earth. As the Glacier moves across the ground they not only pick up material, but glaciers also erode away the ground due to their size and weight.
According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Glaciers are not too hazardous because they usually reside in remote locations. A few hazards that can happen from Glaciers are floods, avalanches, and icebergs. Floods can happen when water builds up on the top of a Glacier during the melting season and then can spill over into the land below. Avalanches from Glaciers happen when a piece of ice breaks off and travels downhill. Icebergs are broken off pieces of Glaciers that are found in the water. The famous story of the Titanic happens to have had an iceberg in it.

How are Glaciers Beneficial?
Glaciers help to provide many people with drinking water, water for crops, and hydroelectricity. Glaciers house freshwater and as they melt this freshwater is released. Dams are built to catch the run- off water from glaciers and turn it into electricity.
