History and Government.
In the late 18th century, most of the modern day Ukraine was part of the Russian empire. It was taken over by the Russians. They fought over Ukraine for sometime but on August 21 1991 the Soviet Union fell apart and Ukraine became their own country again. In January 2009 the Ukrainian government was involved in a dispute with Russia concerning natural gas prices, and for two weeks there was no gas flowing from Russia to Ukraine. The Ukrainian economy was also beset with problems related in part to the global economic down turn of 2008-09.
Education
It is important in the Ukraine that children receive a good education. They are required to start school at 6 or 7 and have to stay in school till they are 15. After high school, they may choose if they want to go to University or just get a job. Most schools in Ukraine are free except for private schools which charge a fee.
