What is permafrost?
Permafrost is permanently frozen soil, rock, or sediment that stays frozen for over a year. Places in the Earth such as Alaska, Canada, and other countries far in the north are experiencing thawing due to the increasing air temperatures by greenhouse gases.
Why are the temperatures being taken at Deadhorse?
Why are the temperatures being taken at a depth of 65.5 feet?
The reason that temperatures are taken at a depth of 65.5 feet is most likely because that is the area where the permafrost actually starts forming.
Whose idea was it to test here? Why?
Is this the only location at which permafrost-layer temperatures are being monitored?

Independent and Dependent Variable
The independent variable is the variable that is always on the x-axis in a graph. The dependent variable is the variable that is on the y-axis in a graph. For this graph, the independent variable is the year. The dependent variable is the temperature at a 65.5 feet depth.
Why is permafrost important in climate change research?
Permafrost traps methane gas, a very powerful heat-trapping gas. When permafrost is melting, as it is now, methane that's trapped in the permafrost is no longer trapped. It 'leaks' from the permafrost. When methane leaks into the atmosphere, it absorbs the sun's heat, making our atmosphere warmer.
How do the variables relate
The variables' relationship is direct. For example. the dependent variable depends on the independent variable. The independent variable is on the x-axis and the dependent variable is on they-axis. Independent variable is usually something like time. In this graph, the independent variable is the Year and the dependent is the Temperature.
They wanted to test in Deadhorse, AK because the temperatures were cold enough ro record. The environment was also safe to take the temperatures. The average weather there is about 2°F. It was Max CLifton Brewer's idea to take some of the permafrost temperatures at Anchorage which is just a few miles from Deadhorse.
No, Deadhorse AK is not the only place where permafrost-layer temperatures are being monitored. Permafrost-layer temperatures are also taken at Siberia, Russia, Greenland, Canada and many other places.
The main reason for the temperatures being taken at Deadhorse is because that is the location of the Permafrost. However, another reason for this is because they have taken data for a long time and want to keep collecting data for Deadhorse, AK.
