Which sunglasses lens type is the most and least effective in blocking ultraviolet light?
For this science fair project I am determine to figure out: Which sunglasses lens type is the most and least effective in blocking harmful ultraviolet light?
I think that polarized lens will be the most effective lens, because my research shows that the clearer the lens is, the better the vision it becomes. I have always heard a lot of people saying that polarized lens is the best, and it is designed to reduced glance, which will make the vision clearer. However, I think that the 3D Glasses would be the least effective, because it is only for watching movies.
The supplies I will be using to conduct this experiment are:

UV Light Detector
Various sunglasses : Polarized lenses, Mirror-coated lenses, Gradient lenses, Transition lenses, 3D glasses and Normal sunglasses ( from stalls )
1) Place the sunglasses lenses in the UV Light Detector.
2) Observe and record the number intensity of the detector. If the detector shows that it is fully blocked, then the sunglasses are blocking harmful ultraviolet rays.
3) Remove the sunglasses from the UV Light Detector.
4) Reset the UV Light Detector by pressing the buttons. Once again place the sunglasses in the UV Light Detector.
5) Observe and record the number inside the detector.
6) This same procedure should be repeated with all of the sunglasses pairs that will be used in this project.
7) Calculate the average UV reduction ( if any ) for each pair of sunglasses.
8) Record the data in a table similar to the one shown
9) Using the data in the table, plot a bar graph with UV level along the y-axis and Sunglasses Lens Type along the x-axis.

Many sunglasses are 100% UV or 99% UV, even a 3D glasses is 99% UV. According to my experiment, Normal Sunglasses that are sold at the stalls are the least effective and Polarized Lens is the best as it helps us see much clearly. If you are still wondering whether sunglasses are only for fashion or really functional , I bet you all know the answer now. Sunglasses are both a fashion accessory and also designed to protect our eyes.

I have always wondered whether sunglasses are for fashion only or are they really functional? Nowadays, there are different types of sunglasses and the prices are different. How do we know which type of sunglasses lens is the best? Feeling curious, I decided to do an experiment testing out which sunglasses lens is the most effective in blocking harmful ultraviolet light.

This experiment is very useful to our daily life, as many people are suffering from diseases caused by ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is very dangerous, for it causes diseases to our eyes and skin.
What is Ultraviolet light ( UV )?

and is sometimes called"sunburn ray".
Nowadays, more and more
scientific evidence show
that long-term exposure to
UV radiation can damage
our eyes. UV light is
measured by nm. It is a
metric unit of length equals
to one billionth of a meter.

A common eye disease caused by UV
The most common disease caused by UV is cataract, and the result is a hazing of the normally clear lens inside of the eye. The normal lens allows light to reach the retina for clear vision. Cataract reduces vision; the number one cause of blindness in the world is cataract. Although factors such as nutrition and genetics play a role in cataract formation, UV exposure is still regarded as the primary cause.
With the thinning of the
earth's ozone layer and the
growing popularity of
outdoors activities, there is a
strong possibility that UV-
related eye disorders will
increase within the next
decade. If you do any
outdoors activities, be
reminded to put on your
sunglases or else UV will be
extremely harmful to the
health of your eyes.
