•Assess how the beliefs and behaviors of the cultural group affect the client or family

Cultural awareness is understanding the differences between yourself and people from other countries or other backgrounds, especially differences in attitudes and values. Cultural sensitivity is being receptive to the accepted behaviors of a particular society.
Cultural Competence encompasses behaviors, attitudes, and policies that are used collaboratively among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations. What is the big deal cultural competence? The increasing population growth of racial and ethnic communities with their own cultural traits present a challenge to the health care delivery service industry in this country. Personal Role to Cultural Competence
•Admit personal biases, stereotypes, and prejudices
•Become aware of cultural norms, attitudes, and beliefs
•Value the concept of diversity
•Extend myself psychologically and physically to the specific client population
•Recognize my personal comfort level in different situations
Nurses' development of cultural awareness adds to the effectiveness of their clinical practice The provider and the patient each bring their individual learned patterns of language and culture to the health care experience which must be transcended to achieve equal access and quality health care. Why cultural awareness is critical to delivery of healthcare services? Cultural competency is key component to closing the disparities gap in health care. Patients and health care provides can talk openly about health concerns without cultural differences hindering the conversation. Health care services that are respectful and responsive to the cultural needs of patients can help bring about positive health outcomes. Culture and language may influence:

Health Outcomes
The way disease and the cause is perceived
Patients attitudes towards health care providers
The access to healthcare services
Delivery of services by healthcare providers.
