Beliefs and Practice
The Five Pillars


Confess the faith by reciting "There
is no God but Allah, and Muhammad
is His Prophet."
~ Salat

Pray five times a day at specific times,
while facing the holy city of Mecca.
~ Zakat

Give money to the poor.
Islamic scholars have determined
that the amount is 2.5% of a person's
total assets.
~ Sawm

Fast from sunrise to sunset during
the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This is done in remembrance of the giving of the Qur'an.
~ Hajj

Take a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once if possible. Mecca is a holy city for Muslims; by law non-Muslims may not enter it.
The Afterlife
~ Unbelievers
These are going to suffer punishment for not following the ways of Allah and the Qur'an.

~ Believers
After the Resurrection, these will spend the afterlife in Paradise, a place of joy and bliss.

Islam gets a lot of media attention because of the turmoil in the Middle East
Islam as we see it today
The other side of Islam
A lot of the tension in the Middle east can be credited to sectarianism between Sunni Muslims and Shi'ite Muslims.
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
ISIS’s goal is to create an Islamic State by reclaiming Muslim homelands. They have targeted anyone who they believe to be against their cause.

Such as America and it's allies.

And even declaring...
Shi'ite Muslims a greater threat than the USA to the pure Islamic state.
That's a the negative side of Islam.

But as we all know, it is never fair to judge an entire system by it's abuses.

And so, let take a look at...
Muslims have incredible amounts of devotion to their beliefs.
Muslims value family highly
Strong sense of community where individuals have value and importance within a group.
Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are all Abrahamic religions, tracing their roots back to Abraham
Family forms the building block of Muslim society
This results in a strong sense of identity.

before his death in 631 Arabian Peninsula was converted to Islam
split into the Sunnis and the Shiites
