How does Twitter enhance participation?
What is Twitter?
let us have a quick start!
What is so fancy about Twitter?
Let us dig deeper, and take a look at its features.
Some other significant Twitter advantages which enhance participation
-Breaking news
So......What is it?
Twitter is an online social networking service and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as “tweets”. (BTB, 2012)

History and Usage
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey .The service rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with over 500 million active users as of 2012, generating over 340 million tweets daily and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day.(BTB,2012)
Hi Folks, in my article, I have introduced FIVE social media literacies to all of you...
-Network Awareness
-Critical Consumption

Attention refers to ...
what are they ?
I totally forgot

Hey Howard, we will only focus on PARTICIPATION today!
OKAY! Let me explain to you...
Participation makes individuals active citizens and not just be passive recipients.(Rheingold,2010)
In particular, in the event citizens participate they seize to accept things that come their way just for the sake of it; they no longer acquire what is sold to them blindly or taught; they also do not accept government policies without according the same critical engagement (Rheingold,2010)
They are...
So how does Twitter enhance participation?
As Howard Rheingold continues:
"Social media—networked digital media such as Facebook, TWITTER , blogs, and wikis—enable people to socialize, organize, learn, play, and engage in commerce."
"The new home page sums up not what Twitter is, but why you should care. The new home page image also happens to hit on one of my personal favorite things about Twitter: the ability to connect with people from around the world". (Ries, 2011)

Tweet means disseminating instant messages intended for a wider audience (the world). In the process if people on twitter have interest in the commentaries then they follow the tweet with messages. This becomes an interactive situation thus enhancing participation on that particular subject of discussion. In other words it may trigger a debate thus provoking participation of many audiences.
As mention before, Twitter encourages people to share "what's happening" with people who they care about.
Twitter offers businesses the subtle ability to engage their customers and draw out customer's opinions of them, their brand and their products or services so they can become more nimble and meet customers' needs.(Dugan,2011)

1. A form of reply upon receiving a tweet where the users incorporate the original messages so as to trigger further discussions among their followers (Nations, 2013).

Tweeting and retweeting involve comprehensive discussions regarding a subject issue (Lacy, 2011). This basically would be regarded as a platform for participation.
However, there is no accurate measure to demonstrate how the two features foster participation; but then the fact that there is interaction qualifies them as boosters of participation.
Following someone on Twitter means:
-You are subscribing to their Tweets as a follower.
-Their updates will appear in your Home tab.
-That person is able to send you direct messages.
(Twitter, 2013)
What are followers?
Followers are people who receive your Tweets.

If someone follows you:
-They'll show up in your followers list.
-They'll see your Tweets in their home timeline whenever they log in to Twitter.
-You can send them direct messages.
If you are curious about your favorite celebrities' lives, just follow them!

And you certainly do not want to miss any
The follwer/following features are similar to the " friend" or "subscribe" options of other social media.

The actions embedde on these two features entail entail interaction. In turn this may be said that it enhances participation for the simple reason that there are engagements, discussions, and exchange between the individuals.

The same case would apply to direct messages although the dynamics in it may not be as volatile as those experienced in the four features discussed above.
You can follow anyone on Twitter, and anyone can follow you. Although there is an option to block someone from following you, unlike with Facebook, you don’t have to actively accept someone’s friendship in order for them to see your updates. It’s easy to accumulate followers passively, and common for strangers to follow your feed.(Hamilton,2011)
-Twitter is a Democracy
National and world events, from sports and entertainment to major breaking news, draw a lot of attention from Twitter users.(Soltesz,2011)
-Trending topics
Large scale events, from television shows to natural disasters, become the topics of enough posts and discussion to appear as Twitter "Trending Topics," giving Twitter users an idea of what is current, important and popular.(Soltesz,2011)
Please bear in mind that...
Twitter may be characterized by negative participation especially if the users engage in poor discussion process. This is because in certain instances the tweets, for example, may not be that appealing to some of the audiences. This may trigger hostility and there after insults causing negative participation. It is imperative that the entire communication process be carried out in dignity and respect for the targeted audience otherwise the participation would not be pleasant.

2. A republication of what other people have written so as to invite followers to make comments (Grauschopf, 2013
All in all ,participation largely refers to the capacity of the end users to respond to Twitter’s content with critical mind and aggressiveness. By aggressiveness the researcher means the capacity to question the content and as a result generate more sound arguments and judgments. This discursive, elaborate, and interrogative aspect during application of twitter is what seems to be the aspect of participation. The reader will concur that such is a good thing because media literacy serves as a major boost to eradication of brain wash (Ferenstein, 2010).The other point is that the issue which makes social media “social” is the fact that technical skills ought to be interactive at all times.Twitter among others allows individuals to engage, interact, learn, have fun, and organize (Rheingold, 2010).
