BACKGROUND Alejandro Reyes Roces (July 13, 1924 - May 23, 2011) Family Background Academic Background He attended elementary and highschool at the Ateneo De Manila University.
He then studied at the Arizona State University for his tertiary education, which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts.
He attained his Master of Arts degree from Far Eastern University.
He has since received honorary doctorates from Tokyo University, Baguio's St. Louis University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and the Ateneo de Manila University.
Also known as "Anding Roces"
A Filipino author, journalist, essayist, dramatist, teacher, educator, fighter, raconteur, patriot, public servant and a National artist of the Philippines for Literature.
He was born in Manila and he was married to Irene Yorston Viola, with whom he had a daughter, Elizabeth Roces-Pedrosa. Accomplishments Roces has won numerous awards, including the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award, the Diwa ng Lahi Award, the Tanging Parangal of the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining, and the Rizal Pro Patria Award. He was finally bestowed the honor as National Artist of Literature on the 25th of June 2003. Accomplishments He was famously known for:

BACKGROUND Jose Garcia Villa (August 5, 1908 - February 7, 1997) Family Background Academic Background He graduated from the University of the Philippines Integrated School and the University of the Philippines High School in 1925.
Villa enrolled on a Pre-Medical course in the University of the Philippines, but then switched to Pre-Law course. However, he realized that his true passion was in the arts.
Villa first tried painting, but then turned into creative writing after reading Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson.
He enrolled at the University of New Mexico and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and pursued post-graduate work at Columbia University.
Also known as the" Comma poet" and for his pen name, "Doveglion".
A Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, painter and a National Artist of the Philippines for Literature.
He was born in Manila, Singalong District. His parents were Simeon Villa (founding president of the First Philippine Republic) and Guia Garcia (a wealthy landowner).
In 1974, he married Rosemarie Lamb, with whom he had two sons, Randy and Lance. They annulled ten years later. Accomplishments Villa has won several awards, including the Academy Award for Literature, Guggenheim Fellowship, UP Golden Jubilee Literary Contests, Pro Patria Award and Heritage Award.
He was bestowed the honor as the National Artist for Literature in 1973.
He was one of three Filipinos, along with novelist Jose Rizal and translator Nick Joaquin, included in World Poetry: An Anthology of Verse from Antiquity to Our Time published in 2000. LITERARY
PIECE
First, a poem must be magical,
Then musical as a sea gull.
It must be a brightness moving
And hold secret a bird’s flowering.
It must be slender as a bell,
And it must hold fire as well.
It must have the wisdom of bows,
And it must kneel as a rose.
It must be able to hear
The luminance of dove and deer.
It must be able to hide
What it seeks like a bride.
And over all, I would like to hover
God, smiling from the poem’s cover. ANALYSIS First, a poem must be magical, In the first line, it implies that a poem must be magical, meaning it should be unknowably enchanting. It has to have something in it that anyone can’t define appropriately which make the readers interested in reading it thoroughly. Then musical as a sea gull. It must be music instead of noise as if poetry is a sound. It must be a brightness moving
And hold secret a bird’s flowering. A poem must be mysterious. It should not convey direct information to the readers for they must be able to interpret poetry before they can completely understand it. It must be able to hear

It must have had different sides of a topic so that different kinds of people can relate to it. And it must hold fire as well. In contrast to the fifth line, it must also hold strong emotions as well because poetry does not contain a mere weakness but strength as well. Although in all these must-haves, it seems like it favor the readers, poets should still be able to leave hanging thoughts into the readers mind so that they will remember the poem. It implies the religious aspect of poetry which means that it must contain God related ideas, must not contradict God’s wisdom and must affect the reader not only emotionally or mentally but also spiritually. He and his brother Kiko one day were driving the chickens from the cornfield until they heard two chickens fighting with each other. Kiko caught one of the chickens and it looked peculiar, perhaps strange. The brothers fought over it because they don’t know whether it is a rooster or a hen (for Kiko, it is a rooster, and for his brother a hen). And so they told their parents but in the end they just argued as well. Kiko found a way to settle this problem; they asked help to teniente del barrio, the chief of the village but he didn’t know for he thought it was a bird of some kind. Next, they decided to go to the town of Katabusan where Mr. Eduardo Cruz lived. He studied poultry raising in University of the Philippines and operated so he is an expert on chickens and eggs. He told them that if it had round feathers on its back, it is a hen, but if rather pointed, then it is a rooster. Upon examining, it had both kinds of feathers so he suggested killing it and examining its insides but Kiko yelled, “No”. They walked empty-handed (empty-answered) and decided to test a chicken to a fight to have an agreement whether it’s a rooster or a hen. It was matched with a red rooster, a killer chicken from Texas. The fight was awkward because a lovesick expression came into the red rooster’s eyes and it did a love dance. It was a fair match then a riot broke out, the brothers left and ran. Kiko’s brother believed him and so the argument was over. However, something happened the chicken began to quiver; it stood up and cackled with laughter. Something warm and round dropped into his hand. It was an egg. And it must kneel like a rose. A poem must also contain knowledge and wisdom but must still be humble at the same time. ANALYSIS What made Kiko and his brother argue about the chicken which they caught? The chicken that they caught was peculiar, in the sense that they could not tell whether the chicken was a rooster or hen. How did each present their arguments? How did their parents, the chief and Mr. Cruz try to settle the issue? Were they successful in resolving it or did they complicate the matter further? When they were resolving the issue with their parents about the gender of the chicken, their mother said that the chicken was a binabae, a rooster that looks like a hen while the father argued that the chicken was a hen. Then things complicated a bit. Their parents began to fight, and her mother cried. When they went to Tenienteng Tasio, he pointed out that the chicken must be a different kind of bird, which was near impossible according to the reaction of Kiko. While Mr. Eduardo Cruz, who studied poultry husbandry in UP, wanted to kill the chicken so he can examine its insides to determine whether it is a rooster or chicken. His brother didn’t want it to be killed, so they settled the issue in another way. What did the two boys do to know whether the chicken is a rooster or a hen? What did they realized at the end? Kiko and his brother took the chicken to the cockpit. Kiko looked for a suitable opponent for their peculiar chicken and they chose a red rooster, which was a veteran of the pit and a killer chicken from Texas. The fight became awkward because a lovesick expression came into the red rooster’s eyes, then it did a love dance. A riot began and after escaping it, they now know that the chicken was a hen, which laid an egg after they concluded its gender. Kiko and his brother presented their arguments in the form of hypothesis and observation, according to the chicken’s appearance and how it acts. Kiko said that it was a rooster because of the way it fights, the tail of the chicken and its spurs while the brother argued that there were no comb and wattles. 1. Merienda.

7. Our eyebrow speaks.
The eyebrows usually convey emotion through various facial expressions. By raising our eyebrows we can also communicate a positive affirmation of "yes" when a polar question has been asked.
8. Our lips give directions.
Consider this as another non-verbal expression performed by Filipinos. By puckering our lips and facing a certain direction, we are giving clear and specific instruction on which way to go. Instead of wasting physical energy by lifting our arm/hand to point, we conserve energy by using our puckered lips.
9. Pinoy hospitality.
Just about everyone gets a hearty "Kain tayo!" invitation to break bread with whoever has food to share, no matter how skimpy or austere it is.
10. Sing-a-long.
Filipinos love to sing, and thank God a lot of us do it well!
