The Avro Arrow The Avro arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft and was designed to intercept soviet bombers carrying nuclear bombs. General characteristics

One of the pros of canceling the Avro arrow project was the saving of money . The Avro was program to date cost 300 million . That's a lot and considering they will re product it and resulting a more higher cost . At the time the money was hard to gain . We used the bomarc missiles as the alternate for the Avro arrow since it cost less Pro Diefenbaker's claim was that the Arrow program would have cost two billion dollars by 1964 for 169 aircraft or 12 million for each aircraft and that this was too much. The cancellation of the Avro arrow resembled the canadians not much of a big targets by the soviets . The Avro arrow needed a pilot and this could have resulting in many deaths . On August 28th, 1958 the Hon. George Pearkes, Minister of Defense, presented Cabinet with the Bomarc anti-aircraft missile proposal from the U.S. This was accepted as a viable substitute for the Arrow at a very much lower cost to Canada. At that time, Pearkes recommended the cancellation of the Arrow program. A quote from the internet The Avro arrow did not have sufficient range . The arrow could not only meet this requirement , the Avro arrow did not have enough fuel to travel long distances . There were many alternatives to the Avro Arrow such as the F-35 stealth fighter jets which were similar , but not as expensive . It was the most advanced aircraft of it's type in the world. The project which was generating employment for over 14,000 direct jobs and 46,000 indirect workers. This would help Canada's economy and with the aircraft being so impressive give Canada's air force a threat. Avro Arrow

155 million plus This plane back then had stats that could match it to planes of today. The Avro arrow is the equivalent of the F35 of then. Though the cost of the plane was high at the time it would of been a smarter move if they did not cancel the project and continued on with it because by canceling it they were wasting a lot of the money that they spent on it. The aircraft could have continued on if the americans had been apart of the project because of the money they had. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWuZtk8uPP0 Video Also the plane would give people a sense of national pride its an all canadian, canadian built, canadian designed, canadian plane. The plane if fully completed could have been the best plane to be ever designed the prototypes have never been fully completed because the new engine the Iroquois was not complete yet but if it was would the plane been scrapped we will never know. 1. If you were john diefenbaker would you have scrapped the avro arrow of have continued with the project? 2. Do you think all the money spent on the plane was worth it?
