While doubling a cupcake recipe, students practice three ways of doubling fractions using representations, addition, and multiplication. They also convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Fractions That's all folks...... Aim: How are fractions useful in baking? Math is in every kitchen and on every recipe card, and at each holiday gathering. There are alot of math skills needed, especially fractions, when it comes to making a recipe.
Most recipes give guidelines as
to how many teaspoons or cups
of ingredients are needed for a specific quantity.

How do I measure the ingredients?

Most of the ingredients need to be measured by using measuring cups and measuring spoons that come in fractional amounts: 1/2 teaspoon, 3/4 tablespoon, or
2 1/3 cups. I love to bake and in doing so,
I need to know how to deal with fractions so that my recipes taste just right. Sometimes I need to increase or decrease my ingredients according to the number of servings I need; therefore, using measuring cups and spoons and knowing how to add, subtract, or multiply mixed fractions and improper fractions can help me to figure out the right amount to add or delete from the recipe. I need all of your help. Can you help me figure out
how much I need to mix together in order to yield 2 dozen cupcakes?
(Hint: the recipe below is for 1 dozen cupcakes)

2 cups of flour
1 and1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1/3 cup of butter
2/3 cups of milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 bar semi-sweet chocolate
For instance, when I bake cupcakes for our classroom, the recipe I use only yields a dozen cupcakes. That is simply not enough for the entire room.

Problem Solved!! With your knowledge of how to add, change, and simplify fractions, you were able to double all the ingredients in my recipe. 2 cups of flour 2 + 2 = 4 cups
1 and1/2 cups sugar 1 1/2 + 1 1/2 = 2 + 2/2 = 3 cups
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder 2 1/2 + 2 1/2 = 2 + 2 + 2/2 = 5 tsps.
1 tsp. salt 1 + 1 = 2 tsps.
1/3 cup of butter 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3 cups
2/3 cups of milk 2/3 + 2/3 = 4/3 cups = 3/3 + 1/3 = 1 + 1/3 cups
1 tsp. vanilla 1 + 1 = 2 tsps.
2/3 bar semi-sweet chocolate 2/3 + 2/3 = 4/3 = 3/3 + 1/3 = 1 + 1/3

Spoons In order for each one of you to get a cupcake, I need to bake more than one dozen. I have to solve a real-world fraction problem. I call my problem. . . Double-Trouble. We can add each fraction by adding them twice or we can multiply each ingredient by 2.
