THE LOOKING GLASS "When we look in the mirror, we see a true reflection of ourselves.

But for thousands of young women and men, the mirror has a darker side. Rather than a true reflection, theirs is a distorted reality. For them, the mirror is a window into a more sinister, shadowy world."
The looking glass is a organization
that helps adolescents, adults as well as their family and friends of people who are suffering from eating disorders.
Purpose of Charity

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illness.

Studies show that there is a greater success rate with early intervention.

BC lacks the service to provide care for those that don't fall into the mandate of "treating the sickest of the sick."

"For those who suffer from eating disorders, the mirror is a daily reminder of a world from which they cannot escape. They are trapped inside themselves by a disease that consumes and controls every aspect of their lives, every moment, every day. Anorexia Nervosa. Bulimia Nervosa. Eating disorders that torture the mind as they ravage the body."

ANOREXIA BULIMIA Our main source of fundraising comes from our annual Gala which takes place once a year. For the past 5 years it has been held in February as that is anorexia awareness month but this year because of the Olympics we have pushed it back to April. On top of that we send our grants to certain foundations that accept applications for funding. We have not been too successful this year because of the recession but we have had a few people donate which is nice. A lot of the time people that donate have either been affected by and eating disorder themselves or affected by someone close to them having an eating disorder.

"Eating disorders aren't pretty, they also don't garner a lot of support. We will all say that we stood up for cancer, but we don't all say that we gave to eating disorders."
Founded by 3 mothers
Cindy Dobbe
Deborah Grimm
Dolores Elliott
These mothers all had daughters who were suffering from eating disorders. They understood that there was very little support within BC and they decided the take initiative and start something new. The looking glass assists people of all ages and anyone in need of help. "Eating disorders aren't just a silly desire to be thin..."

What would the looking glass do with $5000?

They whould put it directly to resources for families to support families and those afflicted by eating disorders.

Enhance their online and offline support groups

Pay for necissary resources (more summer camps)

They recently just bought a treatment center on Galiano, they used the money they fundraised to buy the property if they had more money they will be able to have girls stay there for longer periods of time without them having to pay. The act of responsibility to take into consideration the importance of extending our universe of obligation
We believe no one should have to leave the country to receive care. That's why we are dedicated to creating Canada's first treatment facility for adolescents with eating disorders. Restoring health to the afflicted and hope to their families. In partnership with the medical community, we are dedicated to helping young women and men get to the other side of eating disorders, returning them to a world where the image in the mirror matches the true one within. "It's not a choice they make. It's not a phase they're going through. It's a disease, as real and as deadly as any other, and like any serious medical condition, it needs serious attention to be cured."
Anorexia is an eating disorder in which it causes people to have an obsessive fear of gaining weight and imagining themselves as much bigger then they really are. It causes them to starve themselves which results serious health issues. They also exercise excessively. Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by episodes of excessive eating followed by self-induced vomiting.
