Hero's Journey: Catching Fire
Transcript of Hero's Journey: Catching Fire
In the book "Catching Fire," Katniss Everdeen's ordinary life is puzzling. Katniss has won the 74th Hunger Games, where children fight to their death to supply their district with food. Her ordinary life was spent hunting in the woods outside of District 12 and letting her braided hair fall down her back. After the Hunger Games her ordinary life changed to wearing frilly dresses and having her very own prep team.
The Ordinary World
"By noon..the reporters, the camera crews, even Effie Trinket, my old escort, will have made their way to District 12 from the Capitol...There will be others waiting, too. A staff to cater to my every need...A prep team to beautify me..My stylist and friend, Cinna..If it were up to me, I would try to forget the Hunger Games entirely." page 3
The Call to Adventure
President Snow threatens to kill everyone close to Katniss if she cannot prove her love for Peeta. This is going to be very challenging for her because her love for Peeta is all an act to keep herself and Peeta alive.
" 'I know. I will. I'll convince everyone in the districts that I wasn't defying the Capitol, that I was crazy with love.' 'Aim higher in case you fall short' 'How can I aim higher?' I ask. 'Convince me,' he says." page 29
Katniss tells Haymitch, her mentor from last years Hunger Games, about President Snow's threats. She needs advice on who to tell and what she should do. Haymitch helps her with this problem.
Meeting with the Mentor
"I tell him everything. About the president's visit, about Gale, about how we're all going to die if I fail. His face sobers, grows older in the glow of the red tail-lights. 'Then you can't fail.' " page 43
Crossing the Threshold
Katniss realizes that it is time to convince President Snow. To prove her love for Peeta she must marry him. She has never wanted to be married. If she is then the Capitol will be expecting her to have children. Her children could easily be placed in the Hunger Games. Katniss tells Peeta that they need to get married. While they were on the Victory Tour at the Capitol Peeta proposed to her.
"I will have to be forever in love with Peeta. The Capitol will insist on it...He means there's only one future, if I want to keep those I love alive and stay alive myself. I'll have to marry Peeta" page 44
Tests, Enemies, and Allies
President Snow puts both, Peeta and Katniss back in the games. President Snow still had doubt about Katniss' love for Peeta. Katniss is under pressure to become allies with another district in the Hunger Games Quarter Quell. She will be battling against past Hunger Game winners.
"Existing pool of victors? Then I get it, what it means. At least, for me. District twelve only has three existing victors to choose from. Two males. One female. I am going back into the arena." page 173
When Katniss and Peeta arrive to training they have to act as one. They also need to split up to find allies with different skills than them. Once training is finished the victors will be put into the arena to start fighting to stay alive.
"I may have ignored him last night in private, but in training we must appear as an inseparable team...I tell Peeta I think we'd do best if we split up, thus covering more territory." page 224-225
Peeta, Katniss, Finnick, and Mags are introduced to a deadly cloud of mist while trying to sleep. The poison in the mist causes muscle spasms when trying to run from it. Mags, one of their allies from district four, sacrifices herself to save Katniss, Peeta, and Finnick.
"A sickeningly sweet odor begins to invade my nostrils and I reach for the others, shouting for them to wake up. In the few seconds it takes to rouse them, I began to blister." page 297
Wiress, Katniss' allie, discovers an important detail about the Hunger Games: Quarter Quell arena. The others can not understand her because Wiress always speaks in riddles. The riddle means that the arena works like a clock.
"Tick, tock. Tick, tock." page 320
"I sit Wiress in the shallows so she can get washed up a bit, but she just clutches her hands together and occasionally mumbles, 'Tick, tock.' " page 321
Once everyone caught onto Wiress' clue, Beetee started thinking of a plan to destroy the arena. "I'm suggesting that after the bolt hits at noon, but before it hits at midnight, we run my wire from that tree all the way down into the saltwater, which is, highly conductive. When the bolt strikes, the electricty will travel down the wire and into not only the water but also the surrounding beach, which will still be damp from the ten o'clock wave..those surfaces will be electrocuted." pages 359-360. They completed Beetee's plan as told but things did not go as planned.
The "elixir" would be the victory over the Capitol by blowing up the force field in the arena. When the arena was destroyed, the Capitol was filled with commotion.
Return with Elixir
"Everything seems to erupt at once. The earth explodes into showers of dirt and plant matter. Trees burst into flames. Even the sky fills with brightly colored blossoms of light." page 380
