Painted Faces & Long Hair At midday
The illusions merged into the sky
And there
The sun gazed down
Like an angry eye. Hunters They are the main leaders of the hunting group - the choir - after the kill the others also want to join in. The Hunters - Jack & Roger The first kill the boys make represents a
movement away from civilization Leadership "I'm calling an assembly." One by on, they halted, and stood watching him. "With the conch I am calling a meeting...page 80 Ralph still represents the leader of the group BUT a power struggle is developing between Ralph,
who provides shelter,
and Jack, who provides meat. "Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in." All the children, except Ralph, Simon & Piggy, join in the chant,
this symbolizes the power struggle which is beginning... Evil "Roger did not consider his escape, but looked from the nuts to Henry and back again..." Page 64 Evil has entered our story - Roger embodies this evil. Goodness Simon represents all that is good on the island "Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy" page 78 Simon gives his meat to Piggy Bullying Jack bullies Piggy - page 75 "Jack smacked Piggy's head." There are instances of bullying throughout the chapter Piggy becomes the victim of much of
the bullying throughout the
chapter Victims The Fire has gone out! bye bye civilization! A ship comes - their link to civilization & rescue - but the fire has been allowed to go out by the hunters. The focus has changed from getting rescued to hunting... This event signals a change in the boys - becoming less civilized and becoming more wild. They are so thrilled about the killed pig that they forget
about the ship that has come and gone with out
rescuing them. another symbol The Mask "Jack planned his new face. He made one cheek and one eye-socket
white, then he rubbed red over the other half of his face and slashed a
black bar of charcoal across from right ear to left jaw. He looked in the
pool for his reflection, but his breathing troubled the mirror." The mask will take over Jack as he can hide behind it..." The mask compelled them." "By the time the pile was built, they were on different sides of a high barrier....Not even Ralph knew how a link between him and Jack had been snapped and fastened elsewhere." page 77 and a division which becomes more
noticeable as the novel progresses.
