La Plagne facts
The 11th century Basilica called St Martin was one of the first Christian churches and has had a very intresting history.
During the middle ages La Plagne and around it was a very religous place.
La Plagne first advanced in the19th century because silver was found in the lead mines around the slopes. These mines also became refuges for members of the French Resistance during the Second World War, they could hide out and test their weapons without being discovered. The mines were also used to hide weapons that were dropped by the British army.

Interesting things that have happened in La Plagne.
In the Alps people can be involved in lots of sports.
Some of these sports are skiing, hiking, snowboarding and cycling. There are lots of other things to do as well.
Many people come to the Alps in the winter as there is lots of snow, but some come in the summer because the Alps are very beautiful.
Every year about twenty climbers die in the European Alps.
Climate change is causing the glaciers to melt, which dislodges rocks. This is making it more risky for mountain climbers by making it more likely that rocks will fall.
People can get lost, and if they get injured it can take hours for rescuers to find them.
Raclette- a cheese that you have on a grill so it melts. Normally it is served with bread, small potatoes, gherkins, pickled onions, dried meat and italian hams.
Tartifette- a plate of potatoes, rebelochon (a type of traditional french cheese), lardons, and onions.
Fondue savoyard-a pot full of melted cheese. Into it you dip chunks of french bread on skewers. Sometimes garlic is added to make it taste even better.
