LIFE CYCLE OF A KOALA
stage two
For the six months in their mothers pouches, the joeys start to develop eyes, ears and fur. After 22 weeks its eyes start to open and it peep out of the pouch. The joey then on starts to eat substance called "pap" made from faeces, like our transition from milk to solids. The faeces helps the digestive system, in preparation for when it starts to eat eucalyptus leaves.
stage three
The baby still drinks its mothers milk while feeding regularly on the "pap". At one year old it leaves the pouch and onto the mothers back, nibbling on eucalyptus leaves.
stage four
A young koala will stay with its mother until the mother is ready to have another joey. From this point its young must go off and find its own start! Maybe even producing young for itself.
stage one
The first stage of the koala is called the 'joey'. It is roughly 2 centimeters long and is born blind, hairless and with no ears. Its safe to say it looks like a small jellybean. At the time of birth, joeys are under-developed, but smart enough to spot the milk from their mothers pouch. After birth, the joey crawls straight to the pouch and stays there for roughly six months.
