Divergent
Theme #3= Identity
"Tomorrow at the choosing ceremony, I will decide on a faction; I will decide the rest of my life; I will decide to stay with my family or abandon them" (Roth 2)
Beatrice is sixteen and she has to decide on her future of what she is going to do. She has to find out who she wants to be and whether she wants to live a new life or continue being with her family.
Theme #4 =
Family
"Scrubbing the floor when no one else wanted to was something that my mother would have done. If i cant be with her, the least i can do is act like her sometimes" (Roth 209)
Hero: "I cant beat Tobias in a fight. I know that already. But I have to destroy the computer. I dive for the gun but before I can touch it, he grabs me and wretches me to the side" (Roth 474)

Coward: "Edward lies on the floor next to his bed, clutching at his face. Surrounding his head is a halo of blood, and jutting between his clawing fingers is a silver knife handle. My heat thumping in my ears, I recognize it as a butter knife from the dinnng hall. The blade is stuck in Edward's eye" (Roth 202)

#13(Bad Luck): "I deleted your apptitude results from the system immediately and manually logged your result as Abnegation. But make no mistake-if they discover what you are, they will kill you" (Roth 258)

Criminal Mastermind: "You see, it perplexed me that the Divergent were immune to the serum that I have developed, so I have been working to remedy that. I thought I might have, with the last batch, but as you know, I was wrong. Luckily I have another batch to test" (Roth 424)

Maytr: "I feel her lips on my forehead and then she runs into the middle of the street. She holds her gun above her head and fires three times into the air. The Dauntless start running" (Roth 443)
Beatrice falls in love with a guy named
Four, and he is a fighting instructor of Duantless. They begin to have a complicated relationship. It goes along with the theme of trust.

The love between Beatrice and Four is like a romance that some people do not agree. This relationship is like a relationship of when people want or seek love but is too complicated because of status or rank.
Tris is in Abnegation, where you have to learn to be selfless. She takes a test too see what faction she belongs in and it turns out different from everyone elses. She finds out she is Divergent, where you can control simulations.
At the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice chooses Dauntless. Everyone is surprised because no one from Abnegation leaves their faction. Now that Tris is in Dauntless, she does things that are out of her comfort zone. Like jumping off a moving train, falling off a seven foot building, and zip lining off a roof. She finds out only a certain amount of initiates can be in Dauntless. Tris learns how to fight while being there, and finds out she can manipulate simulations (which is kept a secret). During initiation, Beatrice sees problems in the city's society. Tris must decide if she will use her secret to her advantage and save the people she loves.
Theme #1=
Trust
"Four leaving us makes me nervous. Leaving Eric with us is like hiring a babysitter who spends his time sharping his knives" (Roth 97)
Beatrice built a comfortable relationship with Four that when he is not around it makes her nervous and she does know what to do. Four makes sure that Beatrice is alright and kept comfortable.
Theme #2=
Bravery
"I believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another" (Roth 207)
The theme bravery in this book is one of the biggest as it shows how the characters must be brave enough to get through their initiation.

Themes
Archetypes
Beatrice left her family to join the Dauntless faction and she misses them as she has always been with them. She does this to remember her mother and she knows that no matter what at the end of the day her family will always be her family.
Summary
Action
Beatrice must fight different people in the DuantleSs compound to have her rank go up and fight to become DuantleSs. If she doesn't, she will become factionless, and have no home to live.

It reminds me of sports because of the competitiveness but a bit harsher because you will not have a home. I think its interesting how much sports can be too aggressive not as much fun. I just think of the Dauntless.
Imagery: "Just past the Abnegation sector of the city is the stretch of building skeletons and broken sidewalks that I know walk through. There are places where the road has completely collapsed, revealing the sewer systems and the empty subways that I have to be careful to avoid" (Roth 24-25)

Foreshadowing: "Something big is happening, Beatrice. Something is wrong. I don't know what it is, but people keep rushing, talking quietly, and Jeanine gives speeches about how corrupt Abnegation is all the time, almost every day" (Roth 353)

Symbolism: "The Candor man wears a black suit and a white tie- Candor standard uniform" (Roth 3)
Literary Devices
Personification: "He leaped into vicious waters to get there" (Roth 307)

Hyperbole: "Instead I get the distinct impression that my heart will burst out of my chest any minute now, and I grab his arm to steady myself as I walk up from the steps" (Roth 38)
