Introduction to the Ethnographic Methodology
as it serves our Comparative Research

EDUU 607- Week 1- Dr. Kimberly Greene
A qualitative approach to digging into a topic/issue to gain/grow in understanding of it and its multiple variables;
An approach to researching that focuses on CULTURE;
Often done via participant observation (field research by one who is actively involved).
What is an Ethnography?
The combination of ways a researcher gathers data and then interprets it to uncover, discover, analyze, and gain understanding of a group’s shared beliefs, behaviors, actions, and other related phenomena- always focusing
on
the Culture/Cultural aspects of the focus.
Typically
, ethnographic researchers are active participants in the group, but the methodology can be expanded to the interpretation of one who has a connection to or ongoing experience with the group (an insider’s POV).
Most data gathered is qualitative, quant is used carefully.
Here is one framework for examining culture:

Macro-ethnographic focus: studying a
broad
group through its culture/ways of being
Micro-ethnographic focus: studying a
small or more discrete
group through its culture/ways of being
Terms to Keep in Mind
The researcher is
not
seeking to find a positivistic, universal truth
The researcher is seeking to understanding
what is
within a specific culture and then gaining even more understanding through meaningful comparisons with “like” groups/cultures.

The researcher must be aware of both “time and space” (nod to
Tobin
) in examining the culture of the focus (issue or practice), in the juxtapositions with other cultures/groups, and in the conclusions drawn from analysis and interpretation.
All of this (listed above) must be explicitly drawn out in the writing to paint a full picture for both the researcher and the reader.
Lessons Learned/Going Forward must also be cognizant of the “time and space” component.
