4/23/13 Galaxies What are galaxies? Types of Galaxies Fun Facts Types of Galaxies The Sun's part in the galaxy A cool game!! Fun and interesting! A galaxy is a huge group of single stars, star
systems, star clusters, dust, and gas bound
together by gravity. There are billions of
galaxies in the universe. Irregular Galaxies do not have regular shapes and are smaller than other galaxies.
Quasars are active, young galaxies. They have huge black holes in the center. The Milky Way is the second largest galaxy in our
group! The first is Andromeda Galaxy. It takes over 200 million years for the sun to orbit the center of the galaxy! This is called a galactic year. Learn and enjoy this video! Types of Galaxies There are 4 types of galaxies. Spiral, Elliptical, Irregular and Qausars. Spiral Galaxies appear to have a bulge in the middle and arms that spiral outward. Elliptical Galaxies look like round or flattened balls. Spiral galaxy Elleptic galaxy Irregular galaxies Quasars Fun Facts!! We live on a galaxy called the Milky Way Galaxy. It is part of a cluster of about 3000 galaxies! This galaxy is called the 'Local Group'. The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy and has around 300 billion stars! Where did the word come from? The word galaxy comes from the Greek word 'Galaxias' which means milky! Milky Way Galaxy Other Galaxies The closest galaxy to the Milky Way is Andromeda which is 2.6 million light years away from us! Other names are Whirlpool Galaxy, Black Eye Galaxy, The Eyes, Hydra A, Leo I, M33 and M87 etc. - Andromeda Galaxy What do scientists say? Some scientists think that most of the mass of galaxy is made up of a mysterious substance called dark matter! Sun orbits Milky Way The Sun's part in the galaxy Till today, the sun has orbited our galaxy only 20 times! And it revolves at a speed of 4800 m/s. The sun Thank
You! Every picture you’ve seen of the Milky Way from above is either another galaxy or an artist’s interpretation! http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/resources/explorations/galaxies-galore/build/
