Essential Oils 101
What are
ESSENTIAL OILS
?
Why does
EVERYONE
keep
TALKING

about them?
And what is the
BIG DEAL
?
What can they do for
ME
?
How can I
USE
them safely?
How do I get
STARTED
?
Let's Talk About . . .
First, a quick story about the healing power of lavender
In 1910 French chemist and scholar
René-Maurice Gattefossé
badly burned his hand during an experiment in a perfumery plant and quickly applied
lavender
essential oil. He was amazed at how quickly his burn healed and with very little scarring. This started a fascination with essential oils and inspired him to experiment with them during World War I on soldiers in the military hospitals.
The term “
essential oil
” is a contraction of the original “
quint[essential] oil
.”

Matter is composed of four elements, namely, fire, air, earth, and water. The fifth element, or
QUINTESSENCE
, is the spirit or
LIFE FORCE
.
Distillation is the Key
Distillation is the process of removing the SPIRIT (or "
LIFE FORCE
") from the plant (the chemical constituents).
This is also reflected in our common language since the term “spirits” is used to describe distilled alcoholic beverages such as brandy, whiskey, and eau de vie.
Is Distillation Important? YES!
The distilling method is very important to the quality (and therefore the
PURITY
and
EFFECTIVENESS
of the essential oil.)
Why is EVERYONE talking
about ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils are physical in nature
and composed of complex mixtures
of naturally- produced chemicals.

These are NOT perfume or fragrance oils!
Oxygenated Compounds
esters aldehydes
ketones alcohols
phenols oxides
Essential Oils from plants, due to their unique, dynamic and complex chemical compounds offer therapeutic and medicinal benefits to our bodies and well-being.
Essential oils offer
these properties:
FDA says to tell you:
Essential oils have also been used for
THOUSANDS
of years for
MEDICINAL
benefits as well as for their
SPIRITUAL
and
EMOTIONAL
uplifting properties.

Primarily extracted through careful steam distillation and cold pressing, the
PUREST
essential oils are far more
POWERFUL
than the botanicals from which they were extracted.

Today, there is a REVIVAL and DISCOVERY of how to use essential oils for our health and well-being!
What ARE Essential Oils?
How Are Essential Oils Extracted From Plants?
The seed the plant grows from
The growing conditions and use of only natural, earth-friendly pest control
The plant's growing conditions
When and How the plant is harvested
How soon the plant is distilled after being harvested
The distillation machinery
And, distilling the plant only

What Makes a Difference in Distillation?
These naturally produced chemical constituents, given to us from
NATURE
,
have an impact on the physical and emotional aspects of our bodies.

Unlike synthetic laboratory produced pharmaceuticals, plants constantly change and adapt as nature needs! Studies are showing that harmful bacteria cannot keep up with
essential oils!
Terpenes
monoterpenes
sesquiterpenes

now, let's focus on some of the most
popular
essential oils and how they can help you:

But...use of essential oils travels back in time
much further than 1910!
. . .therapeutic, medicinal, spiritual, cosmetic, perfume, hygienic purposes
Ancient civilizations including the Chinese, Indians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used essential oils...for...
Oils are described by Dioscorides, along with beliefs of the time regarding their healing properties, in his De Materia Medica, written in the first century. Distilled essential oils have been employed as medicines since the invention of distillation in the eleventh century, when Avicenna isolated essential oils using steam distillation.
After Gattefosse, a French surgeon named Jean Valnet, pioneered the medicinal uses of essential oils, which he used as antiseptics in the treatment of wounded soldiers during World War II.
