Text Structure
By:Annabelle Charlot

What is text structure?
Text structure is what writers use to build up and organize ideas within a text .Being able to identify text structures can help readers summarize and find clues as to what's most important in a text. Some text structures are Description,
Chronological,Compare/Contrast,Cause/Effect, and Problem/Solution.
Ex: Chihuahuas

Chihuahuas are known for being one of the smallest breeds in the world. They are said to have been originated in Mexico although other theories suggest they are from Egypt, Malta, or China. This small breed has a life span of 15 to 20 years and weighs from 5 to 12 pounds. Chihuahuas can come in different colors such as: white, brown, and or black.Chihuahuas are very loyal, courageous, extremely lively, proud, and adventurous dogs. They adore affection and they are very good companion dogs. Chihuahuas certainly are a mans best friend.
Description
Description is a text structure that features a detailed description of something to give readers a mental picture.
Problem/Solution
Problem/solution is a type of text structure that sets up a problem, produces a solution and then discusses the effects of the solution.
Ex: Child Obesity
Cause/Effect
Cause/effect is a text structure that presents an idea or event, explains the cause, and then explains the effect .
Compare/Contrast
Compare/Contrast is a type of text structure that examines the similarities and differences between two or more people, places, ideas, etc.
Ex: Dogs vs Wolves
Dogs and wolves have many similarities and differences. The dog and the wolf are actually the same species(Canis lupus). Dogs and wolves share the same genetic makeup and they have they same behaviors. They also have an acute auditory sense as well as a profound sense of smell, used in tracking. There are similarities between the two but the differences are unquestionable. Unlike the wolf, dogs can be domesticated and they can be great house pets. Wolves can not be household pets due to their dangerous actions and they live out in the wild.Wolves also live in packs whereas dogs live alone or they live with humans . Although both animals share characteristics they have countless differences.
Obesity has become a big problem around the world and the percentage of children with obesity goes up each year. Children who are obese face a greater risk of having serious health problems like diabetes, bone and joint problems, and breathing problems like asthma or sleep apnea.Children can stop or reduce obesity by engaging in 60 minute physical activities and eating more fruits and vegetables. Everyday physical activities and eating healthier can help kids maintain a healthy weight or help lose weight. By doing these two things child obesity will decline around the world.
Ex: The Dodo Bird Extinction

The Dodo bird was a flightless bird that used to wander around the island of Mauritius.Mauritius was located in the Indian ocean and in the year of 1598 Dutch trading boats arrived on the island. The dutch sailors explored the island and found the Dodo bird. The sailors soon discovered that the Dodo was easy to catch and good to eat. Colonists later arrived on the island and hogs, cats, rats, and monkeys were introduced to the Dodo bird species. Because the Dodo bird was hunted for food and it had new animal enemies, the Dodo bird became extinct.

Problem: Obesity and the health problems with it Solution: Physical activities daily and healthy eating
Cause: was hunted and had new animal enemies Effect: Became extinct
