One of the world's most notorious and best known prisons, over the years, Alcatraz housed some 1,545 of America's most ruthless criminals including Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud (the "Birdman of Alcatraz"), George "Machine Gun" Kelly,
Wake up bell at 6:30 get dressed, clean your cell, go to the mess hall for breakfast.
Return from breakfast to your cell and go to the recreation yard.
Return to the cell house around 11:30. Into the mess hall for lunch.
Back to work finish work at 4:30.
Into the mess hall for dinner, back to the cell.
Lights out at 9:30.
There were not any women convicts.
Convicts were allowed to smoke.
The convicts were counted every 30 minutes
The cons weren't allowed to talk.
Today Alcatraz gets 1 million visitors a year.
Facts about Alcatraz
There were no confirmed prisoner escapes from Alcatraz.
A total of 36 inmates escaped.
Of those convicts, 23 were captured, six were shot and two drowned.
The other five went missing including Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin.
They chipped at the concrete cell walls with spoons and fake heads that they placed in their beds.
No bodies were ever found but their processions were found in the bay
The Convict's Clothing
The Alcatraz inmate uniform changed over the years.
Alcatraz inmates wore trousers in the cellhouse and also at work.
Inmates also wore a
cotton work shirt and a cotton jacket, a raincoat, a wool cap and an overcoat.
Overalls and shirts were stenciled with each inmate's Alcatraz registry number.
