by: Elie Wiesel Autobiography This book is an autobigraphy. An autobigraphy is a history of a person's life written or told by that person.
(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/autobiography) Setting The book takes place during the Holocaust. Elie and his family were taken by the Nazis. They were sent to the German concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Life Experience Elie and his family were deported in 1944 to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald. Elie was only 15 years old. He lost connection with his mother and sister when they were moved to a different camp. His father later died. Along with thousands of other Jewish prisoners, he was moved to Buchenwald in a forced death march. Liberation Buchenwald was liberated on April 11, 1945. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
by: Maya Angelou Memoir/Autobiography a memoir is a record of events written by a person having knowledge of them and based on personal experience. Setting The book begins when three-year-old Maya and her older brother are sent to Stamps, Arkansas. Racism Stamps, Arkansas is a racist world divided between black and white. Maya uses the metaphor of a bird struggling to escape its cage because of all the hatred and racism going on. Life Experience Maya had a rough childhood. She was rapes when she was 8 years old. When Maya moved to California, she had trouble with her parents. For a time she lived in the streets in a car. Both Books Both authors struggle during their childhoods. They both explain what they had to go through in their writings. None of them had it easy. They had to learn how to grow up and learn how to survive on their on. Elie and Maya both experienced racism. They both were discriminated by different groups of people. Nazis-Elie Whites-Maya Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. asked Dr. Angelou to serve as Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Soon after that, Maya published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1970. Wiesel has since dedicated his life to ensuring that none of us forget what happened to the Jews. He does this by writng books about what the Germans did to them. Elie is a Nobel Peace Prize winner.
