Transcript of The Female Cat Reproductive System
Organs of the Female Cat Reproductive System Holds the eggs; during the menstrual cycle, they send eggs to the uterus to be fertilized. Humans vs Cats Feline reproductive organs are similar to human reproductive organs. Just as with a human female, a female cat’s reproductive system consists of the mammary glands, the two ovaries, the Fallopian tubes or oviducts, uterus, the vulva and vagina. Pregnancy Usually lasts 65 days (range 64 - 69 days) Serve as an egg's pathway to the uterus Attaches itself to the ovary and aids in holding the organ in position Where the fetus develops, and also where the egg grows and develops. Where the sperm is deposited when breeding Ovaries Uterine Horn Ovarian Ligament Uterus Vagina Humans In humans, the vagina serves as the receptacle of the penis when mating, as the outlet of menstrual blood and as a channel or passageway for the baby during childbirth. Cats Feline vagina serves only two functions since cats do not have vaginal bleeding. Feline vagina is where the sperm is deposited when breeding. The barbed penis of the male cat would rake against the vaginal walls to induce the female cat’s ovaries to release ripened eggs. Vagina is also known as the birth canal. 24 hours long; Restlessness, vocalization, and nesting Stage 1 Kittens born; Birth of first kitten 30 - 60 minutes Stage 2 Stage 3 Birth of each kitten comes with a placenta; Eaten by the cat; Litter size: mean 4 kittens (range 1 - 8) Mating Proestrus Not many signs are seen in the cat for this stage. The female is attractive to the male, but unwilling to mate. Length: 1-2 days. Estrus This is when the female cat is receptive to the male. Interestrus The period between estrus cycles if the female isn't bred. Length: 2-3 weeks. Diestrus Length: 30-40 days. If pregnant, pregnancy lasts on average 65 days in the cat.
