What else could it be? Discuss on your tables. Act 3, Scene 1: Cassio brings musicians to play in front of Othello's house, but Othello's servant sends them away. Cassio sends the servant to ask if Emilia will speak with him. Iago enters and promises Cassio that he will keep Othello out of the way. . . . Emilia tells Cassio that Desdemona is already pleading his case to Othello, but Cassio still wants to talk to Desdemona, and Emilia invites him in.
Act 3, Scene 2: Othello sends Iago to deliver some official correspondence, and tells him to meet him later to inspect some fortifications. A maiden never bold,
Of spirit so still and quiet that her motion
Blushed at herself.
And she, in spite of nature,
Of years, of country, credit, everything,
To fall in love with what she feared to look on?
It is a judgment maimed and most imperfect
That will confess perfection so could err.
Against all rules of nature, and must be driven
To find out practices of cunning hell
Why this should be. When Othello speaks to Desdemona, he is moody and doesn't say much.
In fact we don't see them talk much during the whole play.
But when she isn't around, he proclaims his love:
"Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul
But I do love thee..." 1. What are the weaknesses in:
a. Othello's character
b. His relationship with Desdemona?
2. How does Iago use these weaknesses against Othello in Act 3 Scene 3? 1. Othello does his best to be 'white' in Venetian society.
2. Although people respect him for this, and his status as a soldier, he still experiences racial prejudice.
3. Deep down, he believes in this prejudice: that he is inferior.
4. Because of this, he cannot truly accept that Desdemona loves him.
5. This makes it easy for him to fall for Iago's lies and become mad with jealousy. What advice would you give to Othello and Desdemona? A Fatal Flaw L.O. Othello seems to be enthusiastic only when she isn't around- abrupt and formal like a military man when she is. Desdemona lies about the handkerchief and seems to fear Othello. Romeo is impulsive and kills Tybalt without thinking what the consequences will be. Romeo's impulsiveness makes his instant love for Juliet seem rash and immature. Othello has internalised the prejudices around him- Desdemona can't really love him?
Othello's self-hatred makes him jealous and un-trusting of D. Romeo and Juliet are from opposing families.
Romeo and Juliet heavily use religious imagery to describe their relationship. Borders on Blasphemy.
Juliet vs. father - marriage to Paris arranged.
Desdemona vs. Father - open and defiant.
Othello is a black man in white society. Interracial marriage not accepted.
Othello & Des. religiously incompatible (Des = Angel; Othello= Devil) Romeo's relationship softens him, making him unable to hate tybalt. Romeo and Juliet are secretive.
Romeo and Juliet cannot live without eachother and commit suicide.
Othello and Desdemona are also secretive at first, but then entirely open.
Othello trusts Iago over his wife, leading to tragic end.

2. Part of the mark scheme looks for historical context. Make sure you mention attitudes to women/moors or religious attitudes towards blasphemy in your answer.
3. Answer the question. Remember it's about Shakespeare's presentation of relationships. Talk a lot about what he is trying to do. Use his name a lot!
4. Remember this is a comparison question. It is best to compare one point from each play at a time. A typical structure for one of your four sections:

You do this by stating what Shakespeare is trying to suggest about the relationships.
E.G. 'By introducing a break in the iambic pentameter of Romeo's speech in this way, Shakespeare is suggesting that his love for Juliet is more substantial than his love for Rosaline.
If you don't talk about what Shakespeare is trying to say about the relationship, you have not answered the question. Embed your quotes. Long quotes = bad
Short phrases/words from the text embedded into your own sentences = good.
e.g. 'Romeo describes Juliet as a 'holy shrine' and he is described as a 'pilgrim.' Link your paragraphs. You are comparing, so you must link your paragraphs. Don't just jump from one point to the next.
Link by using comparative language:
Similarly/In contrast/On the other hand/Likewise/ In the same way etc. Other minor things:
1. Substantial love is not a theme of Shakespeare's; it is just an area you are investigating. You are considering how true/substantial their love is presented to be.
2. Never retell big chunks of the story.
3. Follow the PEE structure. One point per paragraph, supported by evidence and fully explained. Example PEE paragraph.
In both plays, the couples' relationships are presented by Shakespeare as being in opposition to the societies in which they live.
Romeo and Juliet's families are at war with each relationship goes against society... other and their relationship would have been unacceptable as a result. This is indicated by Juliet at the Capulet ball, when she realises that Romeo is a Montague and exclaims that her 'only love' has 'sprung' from her 'only hate'. Her words clearly reveal the hateful relationship that exists between the families and how inappropriate a relationship with Romeo would be as a result. Indeed, in Elizabethan times, rules relating to family and honour would arguably have been much more important than they are now, and audiences at the time would be fully aware of such barriers to love. This sense of honour is displayed in full by Tybalt in the same scene in his seething reaction to Romeo's presence at the ball. Shakespeare thus presents their relationship as something forbidden by society, so much so that Juliet finds herself in an impossible dilemma.
